Moi University Breaks Silence on Insolvency Reports Ahead of School Reopening

Moi University has responded to concerns about its financial status, saying the institution is fully operational and on the path to financial recovery as it prepares for the resumption of learning activities.
In a statement dated Friday, July 3, 2026, Moi University Acting Vice-Chancellor Prof. Kiplagat Kotut assured the public that the university will continue to meet its academic obligations despite ongoing discussions about its financial situation.
This follows an appearance by the university before the National Assembly Departmental Committee on Education on Thursday, July 2, 2026, where it gave an overview of its financial situation and explained the reforms that were being undertaken.
“Moi University wishes to give our students, staff, parents, and the wider public an unequivocal assurance that the University is open, fully functional, and continues to deliver on its academic mandate,” Moi University stated.
Recovery Plan Showing Positive Results
According to the statement, the financial challenges facing the institution have accumulated over several years and stem from factors already in the public domain.
The university noted that, with support from the Ministry of Education, the University Council and management have implemented a comprehensive recovery strategy aimed at addressing the financial crisis.
“The financial challenges under discussion have accumulated over several years and are attributed to factors already in the public domain and have informed the strategic intervention by the Government,” Moi University clarified.
The statement further indicated that Parliament was briefed on ongoing academic and administrative reforms, strengthened financial management systems, enhanced revenue mobilization initiatives, and prudent expenditure controls that have collectively reduced the institution’s revenue deficit.
Academic Programmes Continue Without Disruption
Moi University also outlined several achievements that demonstrate normal operations as students prepare to return for learning.
According to the university:
- Teaching and learning are proceeding on schedule across all programmes and campuses.
- The academic calendar has been fully restored and is being adhered to.
- Examinations are being conducted as planned.
- Graduation ceremonies are taking place according to schedule.
- Research, innovation and community engagement activities continue to increase.
- Staff salaries are being paid on time.
“During the cordial meeting with the Committee, the University confirmed that the University was on a recovery path,” the university noted.
Parliament Pledges Support
The university disclosed that the National Assembly Departmental Committee on Education pledged to support its continued engagement with the Government and other relevant stakeholders in addressing historical financial obligations.
It added that internal governance and financial management structures are also being strengthened to establish a sustainable financial footing capable of supporting future operations.

Appeal to Students, Staff and Public
Addressing widespread discussions on social media regarding the university’s finances, the institution urged the public to rely on verified information, insisting that its financial position is steadily improving.
“The University notes the ongoing public discussion, including on social media, regarding its financial position. This is to clarify that, thanks to continuous support from the Government, the University is registering a progressive improvement in its financial position,” Moi University stated.
In concluding the statement, Acting Vice-Chancellor Kiplagat Kotut thanked Parliament, the Government through the Ministry of Education, students, staff, alumni, partners and the public for their continued confidence and support.
“Moi University remains committed to delivering quality higher education. We thank Parliament, the Government through the Ministry of Education, our students, staff, alumni, partners and the public for their continued support and confidence as we work towards a stronger and more sustainable institution,” the notice concluded.
