Nairobi Water Responds After Kenyans Cry Out Over Dark, Smelly Tap Water

The Nairobi Water and Sewerage Company has responded to concerns over a photo showing dark, dirty water flowing from a household tap in Nairobi.

The image has been widely shared on social media, with different posts linking it to residents in areas including Nairobi West, Thika Road and Kilimani.

Residents raised concerns that the water had a sewage-like smell and questioned its safety for domestic use.

Nairobi Water Addresses Viral Photo

In a statement shared on X on Monday, August 10, Nairobi Water thanked residents for reporting concerns about water quality.

“We sincerely thank Nairobi residents for their vigilance and promptly reporting concerns about water quality. Your diligence helps us ensure safe and clean water for all,” the company said.

The company, however, noted that the same photo is being shared online in reference to three different locations.

Nairobi Water said its technical team had reviewed the reports and found no ongoing works in the affected areas that could result in water contamination.

“Our technical team has confirmed that there are no ongoing works in these areas that could result in contamination at this time,” the company said.

Company Seeks Location of Original Post

Nairobi Water said it had contacted the customer who shared the original post and was waiting for a response.

The company explained that the information would help it establish the exact location or estate where the incident occurred.

“This will confirm the exact location or estate so that our response teams can investigate and take necessary action,” Nairobi Water said.

The company did not confirm that the water shown in the viral image came from any of the three locations mentioned in the social media posts.

Nairobi Water urged residents experiencing unusual changes in water colour, smell or quality to report the issue directly to the company.
