The South American football governing body, CONMEBOL, has suspended Palmeiras forward Eduardo Conceição for four months following a controversial incident during the South American U-17 Championship involving a monkey gesture protest against alleged racist abuse.
The disciplinary action comes after a heated encounter between Brazil and Argentina in the youth tournament, where Brazil’s U-17 side secured a commanding 3-0 victory over their rivals.
As per the reports from Ge Globo, Eduardo’s actions were regarded as inappropriate by the CONMEBOL Disciplinary Committee, even though he stated that it was meant to be a protest against racism and not racism itself.
It has led to a heated discussion throughout South American football, with many people criticizing the way in which matters of racism were handled during the game.
CONMEBOL has also reportedly requested FIFA to extend the suspension worldwide, a move that could prevent the Palmeiras youngster from featuring in any competition for his club during the ban period.
Conceição Racism Allegations
The controversy erupted after Eduardo Conceição allegedly suffered racist abuse from an Argentine player during the tense clash between the two football rivals.
Reports indicate that the Palmeiras striker immediately informed the referee about the abuse during the match.
However, the Brazilian teenager’s complaint was allegedly ignored by the match official, who failed to activate the official anti-racism protocol required under football regulations.
The lack of action from the officiating team appeared to fuel frustration from the player as emotions intensified on the pitch.
Following the alleged incident, Eduardo responded dramatically after scoring Brazil’s third goal of the game.
The forward celebrated by mimicking monkey movements in what he later described as a deliberate protest aimed at exposing the abuse and the perceived inaction from match officials.
“After I suffered the racism, I set my mind to score and do the monkey celebration, to make them mad and show that I wasn’t shaken,” Eduardo said after the match.

The South American confederation also sanctioned Argentine midfielder Benítez for allegedly provoking the incident that escalated tensions during the match.
However, the confederation has not fully disclosed details of the exact punishment handed to the Argentine player.
If FIFA extends the suspension globally, it could significantly affect Eduardo’s development at Palmeiras, where the club considers him one of its most promising youth talents.
