Amnesty Kenya Announces New Boss as Irũngũ Houghton Steps Down After Eight Years

Amnesty International Kenya has announced George Morara as the new executive director amid a major leadership transition following the departure of longtime rights advocate Irũngũ Houghton.
In a notice dated May 28, 2026, Amnesty confirmed the appointment of George Morara as the new Executive Director, effective June 2, 2026, following a competitive recruitment process launched in February.
“Amnesty International Kenya is pleased to announce that George Morara will take office as our new Executive Director, effective June 2, 2026, following an open competitive process announced in February,” read part of the notice.
According to Amnesty Kenya, George Morara brings more than 30 years of experience in governance, constitutionalism, public accountability, and human rights advocacy.
George Morara Replaces Irũngũ Houghton as Amnesty Kenya Executive Director
George Morara previously served as Vice-Chairperson of the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights and has held several leadership roles throughout his career.

The organization described him as a strategic and principled leader with a strong commitment to civic engagement, transparency, and constitutional governance.
“George Morara brings a distinguished record of three decades of leadership in governance, public accountability, and human rights advocacy,” Amnesty stated.
Amnesty Kenya also highlighted that George Morara’s appointment comes at a critical time for human rights in Kenya and the East African region.
However, the organisation said it remains committed to working with communities, institutions, and partners to promote accountability, defend freedoms, and advance dignity for all.
Irũngũ Houghton Exits Amnesty International After Eight Years
Amnesty Kenya also paid tribute to Irũngũ Houghton for his dedicated service and impactful leadership during his eight-year tenure.
According to the organisation, Irũngũ oversaw the transformation of Amnesty Kenya from a national office of the International Secretariat into a membership-driven organisation governed by a national board of Kenyans.

Amnesty International further credited him with expanding Amnesty Kenya’s voice on key national issues, including police accountability, protection of civic space, and socio-economic justice.
In addition, Amnesty Kenya noted that Houghton maintained open but principled public engagement with the Kenyan government, businesses, diplomatic missions, and Public Benefits Organisations.
“We are grateful to Irũngũ for his visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to human rights,” read part of the statement.
