Police Boss Killed, Politician Injured in Nairobi–Nakuru Highway Crash

Nyandarua County Criminal Investigations Officer (CCIO) John Rioba has died following a multiple-vehicle accident at the Karai area near the Nairobi–Nakuru highway, while Uasin Gishu Member of County Assembly (MCA) Regina Chumba suffered chest injuries in the crash.

According to reports, the crash was triggered when the driver of a Sinotruk truck travelling from Nairobi towards Nakuru allegedly lost control and rammed into a Toyota Land Cruiser moving in the same direction.

The impact forced the Land Cruiser into oncoming traffic, where it collided with seven other vehicles heading towards Nairobi, resulting in a major multi-vehicle pile-up.

John Rioba Dies After Being Rushed to Hospital

John Rioba was driving an Isuzu D-Max at the time of the accident and sustained serious injuries in the collision.

He was then rushed to Naivasha Sub-County Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

While Rioba died, MCA Chumba suffered chest injuries and was rushed to the hospital for treatment, but her current condition was not immediately disclosed.

Meanwhile, two foreign nationals who were travelling in the Land Cruiser sustained minor injuries, and several other road users were also injured in the accident, though the full extent of casualties is yet to be confirmed.

Seven Died Following Road Accident in Salama

The accident resulted in a huge traffic disruption along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway as emergency teams worked to rescue victims and restore traffic flow.

Police have since launched investigations to establish the circumstances that led to the multi-vehicle collision, which has once again sparked fresh concerns over road safety on major roads.

This accident came a week after seven people were killed and 27 others critically injured following a major road traffic accident at Ack Salama along the Mombasa–Nairobi Highway in Makueni County.

The accident, which occurred at around 9:30 PM on Sunday, 7,2026 involved multiple vehicles, including a truck, a bus, two saloon vehicles, and a motorcycle.

Emergency responders rushed to the scene shortly after the crash, with Kenya Red Cross joining county emergency services, the National Police Service, and other partners in coordinated rescue operations.

According to the Kenya Red Cross, the 27 critically injured victims were evacuated and rushed to Sultan Hamud Sub-County Hospital for urgent medical treatment.

“27 critically injured casualties were evacuated to Sultan Hamud Sub-County Hospital following a major road traffic incident involving a truck, a bus, two private vehicles, and a motorcycle at Salama on the Mombasa–Nairobi Highway last night,” Kenya Red Cross stated.
