Profile of Mercy Tarus: The Woman Behind the Viral ‘Kenya Ni Home’ Movement
Share
Mercy Tarus is a Kenyan activist, educator, poet, and human rights advocate who rose to national prominence in 2023 after publicly confronting leaders over the controversial Finland and Canada education scholarship programme in Uasin Gishu County.
Known for her fearless public speaking and advocacy for accountability, Tarus became one of the most recognizable youth activists in Kenya.
Her influence expanded further during the 2024 anti-Finance Bill protests, where her slogan “Kenya Ni Home” became a rallying call for many young Kenyans demanding better governance and accountability.
Mercy Tarus hails from Uasin Gishu County in Kenya’s Rift Valley region. She graduated from Kabarak University in 2021 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education.
Before entering activism full-time, she worked as a teacher and was passionate about issues affecting young people, particularly education and mental health.
Her educational background would later shape her activism, especially when she became one of the most vocal victims of the Finland scholarship saga.
Mercy Tarus Finland Scholarship Scandal That Changed Her Life
Tarus became a household name in August 2023 after a video of her passionately addressing Uasin Gishu leaders went viral on social media.
The controversy centered on the Uasin Gishu Overseas Education Programme, commonly referred to as the Finland and Canada scholarship programme.
Hundreds of parents had contributed large sums of money, hoping to send their children abroad for studies. However, the programme collapsed amid allegations of mismanagement and financial irregularities.
During a public meeting, Tarus directly challenged county leaders and demanded answers on behalf of affected families.
Her emotional speech resonated with many Kenyans because it highlighted the struggles of ordinary parents who had sacrificed their savings to educate their children.
Reports indicated that her own family was among those affected by the programme after investing heavily in the scholarship opportunity.
Tarus herself had been scheduled to pursue studies in Canada before the programme collapsed.
The viral speech transformed her from a little-known teacher into a national figure.

Refusing Political and Employment Offers
Following her sudden fame, Tarus reportedly received several job offers from politicians and organizations. Among the publicly known offers was one from Ledama Ole Kina.
However, she declined the opportunities, arguing that accepting them could compromise her independence as an activist.
Instead, she chose to continue advocating for parents and students affected by the scholarship scandal.
Her decision strengthened her image as an activist who was not seeking personal gain from her newfound popularity.
The Rise of “Kenya Ni Home”
In 2024, Tarus gained even greater visibility during nationwide demonstrations against the Finance Bill.
One phrase became closely associated with her activism: “Kenya Ni Home.”
The slogan emphasized patriotism, civic responsibility, and the belief that citizens should actively participate in shaping the country’s future.
The phrase quickly spread across social media platforms and protest movements, becoming one of the defining messages of the Gen Z-led demonstrations.
Building on the slogan’s popularity, Tarus established the Kenya Ni Home Initiative, a civic education platform aimed at helping citizens understand their constitutional rights and responsibilities.
The initiative focuses on youth empowerment, governance awareness, and citizen participation.
Beyond political activism, Tarus has consistently spoken about mental health and human rights.
She founded MEPA, an organization focused on promoting mental health awareness and protecting human rights.
Those close to her advocacy work note that she often connects governance failures to the psychological and economic struggles experienced by ordinary citizens.

Her Role in the Finland Scholarship Court Case
As one of the key witnesses in the ongoing Finland scholarship case, Tarus has remained deeply involved in the search for justice for affected families.
In 2024, she appeared in court proceedings linked to the Ksh 1.1 billion scandal involving senior county officials.
During the case, the court warned her against discussing details of the ongoing matter publicly, citing concerns that public comments could affect the judicial process.
She later apologized and pledged to respect the court’s directives while continuing to seek justice through legal channels.
Away from activism, Tarus is also a creative writer.
In October 2024, she launched her debut poetry book, If Tomorrow Comes Without Me. The collection explores themes such as loss, hope, mental health, resilience, and social justice.
The book reflected another side of Tarus that many Kenyans had not previously seen-a reflective writer using poetry to discuss personal and societal struggles.
Why She Became Less Visible Online After 2024
Since late 2024, Tarus has significantly reduced her public presence on social media compared to the height of the Gen Z protests.
While she has not publicly announced a complete withdrawal from activism, several factors may explain her reduced visibility:
- The intensifying Finland scholarship court proceedings
- Growing divisions among prominent Gen Z activists
- Increased scrutiny of activists who gained national prominence during the 2024 protests
- Her shift toward organizational work and writing, including the launch of her poetry book
