Profile of Superintendent Jared Alex Ondu Obura From Kenya Police to UN Peacekeeping Success

Superintendent Jared Alex Ondu Obura has established himself as one of Kenya’s accomplished security professionals through years of dedicated service in law enforcement and international peacekeeping missions.
Born in Kisumu County, Obura began his education at Siaya Township Primary School before joining Otieno Oyoo High School for his secondary studies.
His passion for security and policing led him to Kenyatta University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Security Management and Police Studies.
Determined to enhance his professional expertise, he is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Security Science and Policing Studies.
Joining the National Police Service
Obura joined the National Police Service in 1999 after completing his training at the National Police College Embakasi “A” Campus.
Following graduation, he secured a posting to the elite Rapid Deployment Unit (RDU), a specialised police formation tasked with responding to security threats in some of the country’s most difficult operational environments.
Obura Service in High-Risk Areas
For more than two decades, Obura served in the Rapid Deployment Unit, undertaking assignments in various high-risk and hardship areas across Kenya.
His deployments took him to several security hotspots, including Baragoi in Samburu County, Kapedo and Todenyang in Turkana County, Mukutani and Ngaratuko in Baringo County, Segera in Laikipia County, Liboi and Abdisugow in Garissa County, Mkunumbi in Lamu County, Gamba in Tana River County, Kapenguria in West Pokot County, Archer’s Post in Isiolo County, Mathioya in Murang’a County, Othaya in Nyeri County and Tseikuru in Kitui County.
Through these assignments, he gained extensive experience in border security management, anti-banditry operations, conflict resolution, and civilian protection.

Rising Through the Ranks
Obura’s commitment to professionalism, discipline and integrity helped him steadily climb the ranks within the police service.
Working under the guidance of senior officers and maintaining a strong record of performance, he rose from the rank of Police Constable to Superintendent of Police.
His career progression reflects years of dedication to public service and operational excellence.
United Nations Peacekeeping Mission
In October 2024, Obura achieved another milestone when the United Nations selected him to serve as a United Nations Police Officer under the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA).
He served in the mission until April 2026, contributing to peacekeeping efforts in one of Africa’s most volatile regions.
During his deployment, Obura frequently served as Acting Team Site Leader, taking charge of multinational security teams operating under the United Nations mission.
He coordinated joint military and police patrols across challenging areas while helping to harmonise operational procedures among officers from different countries.
As an Investigation Officer at the Todach Team Site, he handled major investigations aimed at promoting security and accountability. At the Banton Team Site, he helped establish safe zones for internally displaced persons and introduced early-warning mechanisms designed to prevent attacks.
He also led training programmes for local security stakeholders, focusing on human rights compliance, crime prevention, and the prevention of conflict-related sexual violence.

Recognition for Outstanding Service
Obura’s leadership and professionalism earned praise from senior UNISFA commanders.
His ability to perform effectively under demanding environmental and operational conditions resulted in high evaluations from mission leadership.
In recognition of his contributions to international peacekeeping and stabilisation efforts, he received the United Nations Medal and a Certificate of Commendation for service excellence.
