Rosemary Koech’s Parents Defend KCB, Reject Claims of Workplace Hostility

The parents of the late Rosemary Koech have come out in defence of KCB Bank, saying the bank supported their daughter throughout her career, during her illness, and even after her death.
In a statement, the family said the bank never made their daughter’s life difficult but instead gave her the necessary space and support to flourish and become the best she could be.
“We, as the parents of Rosemary Koech, have no doubts in our minds that KCB accorded Rosemary all the necessary space and support to thrive and be the best she could in her career ladder.” The parents stated.
The parents also settled a difference with the narratives surrounding the death of their daughter, claiming that they did not reflect the perspective of their family.
“Whatever narratives are going on do not represent the family’s stand,” they said, asking the public to respect their privacy as they mourn. “We wish to be allowed to mourn our dear child in peace,” the family added.
Rosemary Koech-Kimwatu, ex-Head of Data Protection at KCB Bank Group, was found dead at her residence in Ngong on Friday, 21st August 2026.
The Office of the Data Protection Commissioner (ODPC) is one of many relatives, friends, associates, and well-wishers who are mourning the death of Rosemary Koech, affectionately known as @TechWakili in the circles of technology and law.
In a condolence message issued on August 22, the ODPC said, “Koech was a passionate Data Protection Champion and Partner in the promotion of privacy and data protection practices in Kenya. She was a strong advocate for responsible data protection and a valued supporter of the Office’s mandate.”
Koech was appointed data protection officer at KCB Bank Group, where she has been working since June 2022.

Group Head of Data Protection
Before KCB, she worked as Public Policy Manager at Safaricom PLC and later was appointed Group Head of Data Protection for KCB in June 2023, where she is responsible for managing the KCB Group’s data protection compliance.
Her move to KCB was reported by CIO Africa in 2022 when she announced her transition from Safaricom, describing it as “a season of growth and transition…and my next career challenge”

Koech’s Background includes Legal, Public Policy, and Tech roles.
Before joining Safaricom in 2020, Koech garnered a background in both legal and public policy as well as in the technology industry.
She previously worked as Head of Public Policy & Legal and Regulatory Specialist at Oxygen Marketing Communications, and Senior Legal and Regulatory Specialist at technology and fintech organizations including WayaWaya and MODE.
