Ruto Issues Fresh Directives to Police Ahead of 2027 Elections

President William Ruto has ordered the National Police Service and other security agencies to decisively and lawfully deal with those who fund, organize, incite, or carry out politically instigated violence during the 2027 General Election.

Speaking at the passing-out parade on Friday, 28 August 2026, Ruto said, “There is no room for political violence in our democracy, and the security agencies should deal decisively with perpetrators of this vice.”

“Politically sponsored violence has no place in our democracy. NPS and all our security agencies should therefore take firm, lawful action against anyone who finances, organizes, incites, and perpetrates political violence.” President Ruto stated.

The President’s statement comes at a time when political activity is beginning to heat up, and politicians are issuing increasingly strident warnings against the use of violence and intimidation in political contestation.

Calls by the political leaders for the security agencies to take a hard line against perpetrators have further underscored rising anxieties about politically sponsored violence.

Police Strategy Against Political Violence

In a previous statement made on 23 August, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen announced that the National Police Service would not condone thugs and political violence before the 2027 General Election.

Speaking during the Belgut Half Marathon in Kericho, hosted by Belgut MP Nelson Koech, Murkomen said security agencies would remain on high alert to prevent planned violence, while police would adopt a new strategy targeting suspected goons before they reach political meetings.

“I want to commend the Inspector General of police because he now has a new strategy to arrest and detain goons even before they get to meetings to cause violence,” Murkomen said.

New Uniform Rollout

The president also addressed the graduating officers on the uniforms, stating that the officers will be the first to wear the new uniform before it is rolled out nationwide next week.

“Graduating officers will be the first to wear the new uniform. It will then be progressively rolled out to general duty officers throughout the country effective next week”

The passing out parade was held at the National Police College, Main Campus, Kiganjo, Nyeri County.
