Ruto’s Govt Slapped With 4 Demands After Standard Group Editor Abduction

The Kenya Editors Guild has condemned the reported abduction of The Standard Group Associate Editor Alex Kiprotich and issued four demands to State agencies over the incident.

The Standard Group PLC confirmed that shortly before 9:20 pm on Tuesday, Kiprotich was reportedly abducted along the Gilgil-Nakuru road while travelling to Nakuru.

“The Kenya Editors Guild is shocked, outraged and deeply perturbed by the reported abduction of The Standard Group Associate Editor, Alex Kiprotich, in what appears to be a disturbing escalation in the intimidation and targeting of journalists in Kenya,” the Guild stated.

The Guild said the incident amounts to more than an attack on an individual journalist, arguing that it threatens media freedom, freedom of expression, the public’s right to know and Kenya’s constitutional democracy.

Moreover, the organisation noted that the reported abduction marked the second attempt to seize or harm Kiprotich in barely two months.

Kenya Editors Guild Lists 4 Demands

Against this backdrop, the Guild called for immediate action from State agencies and outlined four demands:

• A swift, transparent and genuinely independent investigation into his reported abduction, including the circumstances surrounding the June 27 incident.
• A full investigation into the reported link between the vehicle involved in the first incident and the National Police Service’s Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau.
• The identification and prosecution of all persons responsible for these attacks, regardless of their position, rank or institutional affiliation.
• A credible investigation into the assault of AFP journalists Fred Ooko and Brian Ongoro, including allegations that their attackers were armed.

In addition, the Guild called on the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to exercise its oversight mandate and ensure that the investigation and any subsequent prosecution receive the seriousness demanded by the circumstances.

“These are grave allegations. They cannot be dismissed, explained away or buried in silence. They demand immediate, independent and credible investigation,” the Guild said

June Attempt to Intercept Kiprotich

The Guild also highlighted an earlier incident on June 27, 2026, when armed men travelling in a Toyota Probox reportedly attempted to intercept Kiprotich as he drove to work in Nakuru.

Kiprotich escaped by locking his vehicle and fleeing the scene. The incident occurred only days after President William Ruto publicly criticised The Standard Group over its coverage.

Subsequently, investigations undertaken by The Standard Group reportedly traced the vehicle involved to the National Police Service’s Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau.

Meanwhile, the Guild linked the latest incident to the reported assault of two Kisumu-based Agence France-Presse journalists, Fred Ooko and Brian Ongoro, while covering a Linda Mwananchi rally in Homa Bay Town.

It said these incidents raise serious concerns about the safety of journalists carrying out their professional duties.

Guild Cites Article 34

The Kenya Editors Guild further cited Article 34(2) of the Constitution of Kenya, which protects media freedom and prohibits the State from interfering with people engaged in broadcasting, production or circulation of publications, or the dissemination of information through any medium.

“These are not privileges granted at the discretion of those in power. They are constitutional guarantees. A journalist does not surrender his constitutional rights by asking difficult questions, publishing uncomfortable facts or holding power to account,” it stated.

The Guild warned that if State agents are involved in attacks against journalists, Kenya would face a crisis extending beyond individual acts of violence because institutions entrusted with protecting citizens would instead target those responsible for informing the public.

It therefore called on President William Ruto and all State agencies to ensure that those responsible for Kiprotich’s reported abduction face accountability and that Kenya upholds its constitutional commitment to media freedom.

“A journalist’s safety cannot depend on whether the Government approves of his reporting. The safety of journalists is non-negotiable. The freedom of the media is non-negotiable and the public’s right to know is non-negotiable,” the Guild stated.
