Saba Saba Protests LIVE: Police Arrest Protesters Near Jogoo House

Commuters were stranded on Tuesday morning after police mounted roadblocks on major roads leading to Nairobi CBD ahead of the Saba Saba protests.

The National Police Service (NPS) announced that it would enhance security checkpoints across Nairobi on Monday, July 7, to prevent violence during the Saba Saba commemorations, following incidents witnessed in previous years.

12:34 pm –  Police in Nairobi have arrested several demonstrators near Jogoo House after they tried to launch a Saba Saba protest.

12:13 pm – Kisumu stayed peaceful on July 7, with businesses running as usual even as activists across the country called for Saba Saba demonstrations.

11:44 am – Plain-clothed officers apprehends a group of activists who had begun demonstrating along Harambee Avenue.

11:38 am – Police have tightened movement along Thika Road, allowing only private vehicles to pass while restricting public service vehicles from accessing the route, a move that has disrupted normal transport and limited entry into the CBD.

11:15 am – Normal operations continue in Eastleigh, with businesses open and roads busy despite Saba Saba disruptions in Nairobi and surrounding areas.

10:57 am – Activists in Mombasa turn up for the Sabasaba commemorations.

10:33 am – Some businesses are open while others remain closed in the CBD with security tighten ahead of the anticipated protests.

10:25 am – In recent days, Kitengela has witnessed several demonstrations, but today’s situation appears different, with calm conditions reported in the area. Some businesses have reopened as police continue to maintain security.

10:19 am – Police have been deployed at Jeevanjee Gardens, where protesters were expected to gather. No protest activities have been reported so far, with the area remaining calm.

10:08 am – At Allsops, police officers are inspecting vehicles to identify and restrict movement of individuals suspected of heading to Nairobi’s CBD for the Saba Saba protests.

9:27 am – Security around Parliament has been heightened, with anti-riot officers stationed at key points within the precincts as authorities move to restrict access during the anticipated Saba Saba demonstrations.

9:00 am – Most businesses in Nairobi CBD remained closed ahead of the Saba Saba protests.

8:23 am – Commuters stranded at Githurai 45 as matatus remain off the roads as the country marks saba saba protests.

8:08 am – Authorities have increased security checks along major entry routes into Nairobi, with new police checkpoints reported on Mombasa Road near Nyayo Stadium and along Lang’ata Road. Meanwhile, officers at the City Stadium checkpoint are limiting the movement of public service vehicles heading into the CBD.

7:47 am – Police have mounted roadblocks on several key roads leading into and out of Nairobi ahead of the anticipated Saba Saba protests. The affected roads include Thika Road, Jogoo Road, Pangani Interchange, Kiambu Road, Outer Ring Road, Lang’ata Road, and roads leading to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).

6:47 am – Police have fired tear gas along Jogoo Road as they disperse crowds ahead of the Saba Saba commemorations.
