Residents of Nyerere village in Murang’a County have been left shocked after a couple was found dead just a few hours after beginning their life together.
According to the Daily Nation, Patrick Mwangi, 28, and Jackline Wambui, 25, moved in together on Sunday, August 9, 2026, in a “come-we-stay” arrangement. Wambui arrived at their new home at around 4 pm, but by about 7:30 pm, both had been found dead.
Mwangi’s mother, Bilha Wangare, described their relationship as deeply passionate despite the conflicts that often affected them.
“It was a love that seemed almost like a spell. They shared an intense passion that was hard to fathom. I took part in many mediation meetings to help them forgive each other. I think the term that fits them best is ‘foolish lovers’,” she said.
The couple had reportedly dated for about three years before deciding to live together. However, disagreements over finances, lifestyle and other personal matters repeatedly strained their relationship.
Jackline Wambui and Patrick Mwangi Had Faced Several Disagreements
For instance, Wambui reportedly complained that Mwangi rarely took her out for entertainment. Meanwhile, Mwangi accused her of taking Ksh 100,000 from him.
In addition, Wambui reportedly objected to the financial support Mwangi gave his parents as she also wanted him to transfer ownership of his motorcycle and the title deed for a 0.1-acre parcel of land he had bought in Makuyu, Maragua.

Because of the disagreements, Wangare organised a reconciliation meeting on August 4. During the meeting, the couple discussed their differences and reportedly agreed to give their relationship another chance.
However, the reconciliation lasted only five days before the tragedy unfolded.
Couple Went Out for Dinner
On August 9, Wambui arrived at the couple’s new home at around 4pm. Later, the two left for dinner before returning at about 7pm.
After they returned, Wambui reportedly appeared tired and drowsy. Shortly afterwards, Mwangi went to his mother’s home and spoke to her before leaving.
Wangare later became concerned and went to check on the couple. She reportedly found Mwangi hanging outside the house, while neighbours discovered Wambui’s body inside.
Police Probe Possible Murder-Suicide
Murang’a County Police Commander Cleti Kimaiyo confirmed that officers were investigating the deaths.
Initial findings suggest that one partner may have killed the other before taking their own life. Nevertheless, police continue to examine the evidence and have not ruled out other possibilities.

Meanwhile, authorities transferred the bodies to the Maragua Level Four Hospital mortuary as investigators worked to establish what happened.
Police are now reconstructing the couple’s final hours, including their movements after dinner and the events that occurred before their deaths.
Wambui left behind a five-year-old daughter, adding to the grief surrounding the tragedy.
For the families and residents who knew the couple, their deaths have raised difficult questions about a relationship that had experienced both intense affection and repeated conflict.
