Train Collides With Bus in Githurai After Attempt to Cross Railway Tracks

A passenger train collided with a PSV bus at a railway crossing in Githurai, Nairobi, leaving both vehicles and nearby property badly damaged on Friday, August 21, 2026 at around 6:30 pm.
Videos circulating online show the bus attempting to cross the railway line as the train approached. The train then struck the driver’s side of the bus before it could clear the tracks.
The impact pushed the bus along the railway line and also dragged a parked vehicle and damaged a nearby structure.
Meanwhile, debris scattered across the area as dust and smoke briefly filled the scene as bystanders quickly moved away from the railway crossing after the collision.
Shortly afterwards, the bus driver emerged from the damaged vehicle as members of the public gathered around the scene.
Githurai Train Collision Involved Nairobi-Ruiru Service
The train involved in the collision was identified as number 9306, operating a passenger service between Nairobi Central Station and Ruiru when it reached the Githurai area.
The PSV bus reportedly belonged to Githurai 45 SACCO and was travelling from Nairobi’s Central Business District towards Githurai.
So far, initial reports indicate that the collision did not result in any fatalities or serious injuries.

Githurai Train Crash Follows Recent Railway Incident
The crash comes days after another incident involving a passenger train on the Nairobi-Nyahururu route.
On August 18, 2026, the Nairobi-Nyahururu passenger train partially derailed near Ol Kalou Railway Station after two wheels from one of its coaches came off the tracks.
As a result, the incident disrupted the journey, leaving passengers temporarily stranded while railway personnel assessed the affected coach. Some passengers reportedly sought alternative transport to continue their journeys.
However, authorities did not immediately report any injuries from the Ol Kalou incident.

Previous Train-Bus Collision in Naivasha
The Githurai collision also follows an earlier train-bus crash near Naivasha.
On August 7, 2025, a train collided with a Kenya Pipeline Company bus at a railway crossing near Naivasha. Reuters reported that at least four people died in the crash, while others sustained injuries.
Unlike the Naivasha incident, initial reports from Githurai indicated no fatalities or serious injuries.
