Trump Praises Tinubu in Letter Months After Threatening Nigeria

U.S. President Donald Trump has commended Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu for dealing with security issues, marking a major change in relations just months after warning Nigeria over attacks against Christian communities.

In a letter to Tinubu dated July 6 and made public by Nigeria’s presidency on Wednesday, Trump praised the Nigerian leader and offered his backing for West Africa’s campaign against terrorism and instability.

“I appreciated your decisive leadership on behalf of the Nigerian people,” Trump wrote, applauding Tinubu’s efforts to address “the violence affecting Christian communities.”

Trump also pledged continued support for Nigeria’s fight against insecurity, saying: “It is a true honor to stand with you in the fight against terrorists and to make the Federal Republic of Nigeria stronger and more prosperous.”

The message marks a sharp change in tone from last November, when Trump accused the Nigerian government of failing to protect Christians from extremist violence.

At the time, he threatened to cut U.S. aid to Nigeria and said Washington could consider military action if the situation did not improve.

Nigeria rejected those allegations, maintaining that insecurity affects citizens of all religious backgrounds rather than targeting one faith.

The latest letter suggests relations between Abuja and Washington have improved, with both governments deepening cooperation on regional security.

According to the Nigerian presidency, the two countries established a joint security working group last year to expand intelligence sharing, training and coordinated operations against militant groups.

The letter was made public just days after U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Africa Frank Garcia visited Abuja for discussions aimed at strengthening security cooperation between the two countries.

Authorities stated Trump’s comments are likely to further accelerate increasing dialogue from Washington to Abuja as both leaders attempt to deepen cooperation in counterterrorism and broader regional security initiatives.

The letter also indicates a gentler U.S. Stance toward Nigeria following many months of disputes over human rights abuses and security issues, while emphasizing the commitment of the two nations to collaborate to counter extremist threats.
