University student leaders have announced that university students across the country will not participate in street demonstrations planned for the June 25 anniversary of the Gen Z protests.
In a joint press statement issued by serving and former student leaders, the student representatives instead called on their colleagues to observe the day through reflection, prayer, and remembrance of those who lost their lives during the 2024 and 2025 protests.
“As university student leaders, we declare here that comrades will not be available for street demonstrations on June 25 and instead will use the anniversary to reflect on their shared responsibility as youths of this country,” they stated.
The leaders expressed their condolences to families who lost loved ones during the demonstrations and expressed solidarity with those who sustained injuries.
Advice To Comrades
They described the deaths and injuries as significant losses to the country, noting that many young people had their dreams and aspirations cut short.
“We, the university student leaders, wish to convey our heartfelt condolences to families who lost their loved ones during the 2024 and 2025 Gen Z protests,” the statement read.
Student leaders also criticized individuals they accused of exploiting peaceful youth activities for personal interests.
They said some people had continuously taken advantage of youth-led movements while young people continued to bear the consequences, including loss of life and sustaining injuries.
Comrade To Stay Away From Protests
Further, the leaders cautioned students against being manipulated by politicians and other individuals who are seeking to use young people to advance their own political interests.
Leaders urged comrades to avoid activities that could lead to violence, destruction of property, or undermine peace in the country.
“We call upon our members to exercise caution and refrain from calls by politicians to participate in activities which will cause loss of lives, destruction to property and that which undermines peace in Kenya,” the statement said.
Protests Anniversary
University leaders encouraged students to mark the anniversary from their homes or learning institutions, particularly for those currently in session.
