Wanjigi Calls for Clear Economic Agenda Before Opposition Unity

Safina Party leader Jimmy Wanjigi has said he is open to working with the United Opposition, but only if the coalition presents a clear economic agenda and a credible plan for governing Kenya beyond the 2027 General Election.

Speaking during an interview with Spice FM, Wanjigi argued that opposition unity should be built around solutions to the country’s challenges rather than solely on removing President William Ruto from office.

He maintained that Kenyans are demanding practical answers on how their lives will improve under a new administration.

“We need this time around to come up with a very credible ‘then what’ for the people of Kenya because Kenyans now are a different electorate,” Wanjigi said.

Wanjigi Says Opposition Must Offer a Clear Agenda Before Unity

According to Wanjigi, the opposition must explain to Kenyans what they intend to do differently if elected in 2027.

He said voters are no longer interested in campaign promises without clear implementation plans.

“We need this time around to come up with a very credible ‘then what’ for the people of Kenya because Kenyans now are a different electorate,” Wanjigi said.

He added that political parties should clearly communicate their policies on issues such as taxation, the economy, and governance before asking Kenyans for support.

In addition, Wanjigi said he would only work with other opposition leaders if they agreed on an agenda centred on the needs of ordinary Kenyans, highlighting that economic transformation should be the foundation of any political alliance.

He noted that simply uniting around opposition to President Ruto would not be enough to convince voters, but the coalition should be able to go beyond targeting one individual and instead market a credible alternative government.

Calls For Leadership Renewal

He said the opposition must agree on both the strategy for defeating Ruto and a comprehensive post-election agenda.

“We must remove William. What is the best method? Because he’s also a political game player,” Wanjigi said.

Wanjigi further argued that the opposition must also galvanize the whole country into a hope agenda that gives Kenyans confidence that their lives will improve after the election.

He also criticised what he described as the dominance of legacy politicians, saying Kenya requires strong leadership at every level of government, from Members of County Assembly to the presidency.

Meanwhile, the Safina party leader stated that national leadership influences governance across the country and that many long-serving politicians have failed to meet public expectations.

He added that Kenyans are increasingly demanding leaders who honour their promises, uphold the rule of law, and deliver tangible change rather than relying on political rhetoric.

Gachagua Meets Safina Party Leader For Consultations

This development comes shortly after Wanjigi met with the former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua at his Wamunyoro residence as he seeks to build political alliances ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Gachagua revealed that Wanjigi visited him at his Wamunyoro residence, where they exchanged views on national leadership, governance, and what he described as the liberation of Kenya.

The Democratic Congress Party (DCP) leader said the discussions were part of efforts to gather opinions from different Kenyans as the country prepares for what he termed the formation of the “6th Administration.”

Gachagua further stated that Wanjigi’s experience in political strategy and government formation had provided valuable insights as consultations continue.

Responding to the meeting, Wanjigi said Kenya’s transformation requires leaders to prioritise national interests above political divisions.
