What to Expect from President Ruto During the Africa Forward Summit

Share

President William Ruto is expected to use the inaugural Africa Forward Summit in Nairobi to push for a new era of Africa-France cooperation centered on investment, innovation, green growth and African-led development.

The high-level summit, officially titled Africa–France Partnerships for Innovation and Growth, will bring together Heads of State and Government on May 11 and 12, 2026, at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) and the University of Nairobi.

The event is being co-hosted by President Ruto and French President Emmanuel Macron.

The Summit is designed to showcase Africa’s innovation potential while affirming a joint commitment between African nations and France to pursue “common, mutually beneficial solutions” grounded in multilateral cooperation and transformative partnerships.

According to the summit’s agenda, discussions will focus on creating a “more balanced, equitable, and mutually respectful partnership” that places Africa at the center of addressing emerging regional and global challenges through sustainable development, investment and strategic collaboration.

Ruto Positions Africa As Global Growth Driver

In his official welcome message ahead of the Summit, President Ruto described the gathering as a defining moment for the continent and a signal of Africa’s growing influence in shaping the global future.

“It is my distinct honour to warmly welcome you to Nairobi, Kenya, for the inaugural Africa Forward Summit, co-hosted by Kenya and France at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) and the University of Nairobi on the 11th and 12th of May 2026,” Ruto said.

The President framed Kenya as both the symbolic and strategic host of the discussions, calling the country “the cradle of humankind” and a place “where the future is being actively shaped.”

Ruto is expected to emphasize Africa’s youthful population and growing innovation ecosystem as key drivers of future economic growth.

“Africa stands at a defining inflection point. Ours is a continent powered by a youthful, rapidly growing population — creative, ambitious, and determined to transform ideas into enterprises, and enterprises into opportunity,” he stated.

The President pointed to sectors such as fintech, artificial intelligence, climate-smart agriculture and renewable energy as areas where African innovations are already influencing international conversations and creating economic opportunities.

“Across our nations, innovation is not a distant aspiration; it is already driving progress. From fintech and artificial intelligence to climate-smart agriculture and renewable energy, African solutions are shaping global conversations,” Ruto said.

Focus on Investments and Financing

A major expectation from Ruto during the Summit will be his push for increased investments, financing mechanisms and stronger development partnerships capable of supporting Africa’s economic ambitions.

“Yet, alongside this immense potential lies an equally urgent responsibility — to unlock the investments, partnerships, and financing frameworks required to scale these opportunities sustainably and inclusively,” he said.

Ruto indicated that the Africa Forward Summit seeks to move beyond traditional diplomatic rhetoric and instead focus on measurable outcomes and implementable projects.

“This high-level gathering reflects a renewed and forward-looking partnership between Africa and France, grounded in mutual respect, shared responsibility, and a clear commitment to delivering tangible outcomes,” he stated.

The President also signaled a deliberate shift away from what he termed “legacy narratives” in Africa’s relationship with global powers.

“Together, we are deliberately moving beyond legacy narratives and toward a relationship defined by co-creation, co-investment, and measurable impact,” Ruto said.

Key Sectors Expected To Dominate Discussions

The Summit will convene leaders from government, business, finance, youth movements, innovation sectors and civil society organizations to deliberate on actionable solutions across strategic sectors.

Among the key areas expected to dominate discussions are peace and security, energy transition, green industrialisation, sustainable agriculture, artificial intelligence, digital transformation, health systems and the blue economy.

The forum will prioritize “bankable projects, investment pipelines, technology transfer, and skills development” aimed at translating policy commitments into jobs and economic opportunities across Africa.

“Our shared objective is clear: to unlock capital, scale innovation, deepen trade and investment linkages, and create inclusive growth pathways that are resilient, sustainable, and African-led,” Ruto said.

The President also emphasized that Kenya and France intend to use the Summit as a platform for aligning policy decisions with investment capital and technological innovation.

“As co-hosts of this Summit, Kenya and France are committed to providing a platform that enables alignment between policy, capital, and innovation,” he stated.

“The two countries aim to catalyze partnerships that are not only ambitious in vision, but practical in execution to deliver results that endure beyond the Summit,” Ruto added.

Nairobi Set For Landmark Diplomatic Gathering

The Africa Forward Summit is expected to attract senior government officials, investors, development financiers, innovators and policy experts from across Africa and Europe.

Ruto said the success of the Summit would ultimately be judged not by speeches or declarations, but by the impact delivered to citizens across the continent.

“Africa is no longer content with aspiration alone. We are advancing with clarity and resolve, shifting from dialogue to delivery, from commitments to implementation, and from potential to performance,” he said.

“The true measure of this Summit will not be the conversations we hold, but the outcomes we deliver for our people,” Ruto lamented.
