Kenya’s Ministry of Health has issued a fresh public advisory after reports of a hantavirus outbreak linked to a cruise ship operating in the Atlantic Ocean.
The World Health Organization (WHO) updated the situation on May 7, 2026, confirming 8 cases and 3 deaths among passengers and crew aboard MV Hondius.
Public health officials in Kenya have reassured citizens that the situation remains under control locally.
“There are currently no reported cases in Kenya, Health authorities are closely monitoring the situation and taking precautionary measures,” the Ministry stated.
In addition, the Ministry emphasized that surveillance systems are now operating at heightened levels. These systems aim to detect any possible importation of the disease through travel routes.
At the same time, authorities have assessed the overall risk and urged calm. They continue monitoring the situation in collaboration with international health partners.
Health officials also confirmed stronger precautions at key entry points such as airports and seaports to support early detection and response.
