The Longombas brothers were a Kenyan musical duo made up of brothers who are Lovy Longomba and Christian Longomba, who grew to become influential figures in Kenya in the early 2000s urban music scene.

The two were also nephews of the Congolese music star Awilo Longomba, which placed them within one of the recognized musical families in African rumba and soukous history.

Their story is rooted in a musical lineage, which starts with their grandfather, Vicky Longomba, a member of the legendary Congolese band TPOK Jazz led by Franco Luambo, and their father, the late Lovy Longomba Sr, who was part of the soukous group Super Mazembe.

The Longombas brothers entered the Kenyan music scene in the early 2000s at a time when a new urban sound known as kapuka was gaining popularity among people.

They then signed with Ogopa Deejays, one of the most influential production houses in Kenya at the time.

In 2002, they released their breakout single “Dondosa,” which quickly became a national hit and introduced them to mainstream audiences.

The song’s success established them as rising stars, and they followed it with other popular tracks, including “Piga Makofi,” “Shika More,” and “Vuta Pumzi,” which marked their taste for catchy, dance-oriented music.

In 2003, after gaining significant recognition under Ogopa Deejays, the duo parted ways with the label and formed their own recording label known as Bad Man Camp.

Debut Album

This move marked their transition toward independence in the industry, allowing them more creative control over their music direction.

Over the next few years, they continued producing music and building their brand, eventually releasing their debut album titled Chukua in 2005.

The Longombas brothers’ influence extended beyond Kenya as they began to perform on international stages.

One of their notable appearances was at the 2006 Channel O Music Video Awards in South Africa, where they represented Kenyan urban music on a continental platform.

Their Relocation

Around this period, they eventually relocated from Kenya to Los Angeles, United States, where they pursued new opportunities and different personal paths.

In later years, the duo’s journey took a difficult turn when Christian Longomba was diagnosed with a brain tumor in 2015.

He underwent surgery to remove the tumor, but later faced complications that required a second operation due to blood clots in his brain.

He also completed six weeks of radiation therapy as part of his treatment.

Christian Longomba’s Death

Despite the treatments, Christian Longomba passed away on March 13, 2021, a loss that was widely felt across the East African entertainment industry.

Following their relocation and the changes in their careers, Lovy Longomba transitioned into religious ministry.
