Why Attractive Women Sometimes Prefer Ugly-Looking Men

Many attractive women choose ugly-looking men or even unattractive men, despite people unconsciously associating physical attractiveness with relationship success.

Real-life relationships frequently tell a different story.

Reasons as to why women choose Ugly-Looking Men

A statement made during a podcast on the Steve TV Show reflects this perspective.

He said, “Get yourself an ugly man because they are reliable and cannot cheat on you.”

From the crowd’s reaction, it was evident that many women understood the sentiment. They associated ugly- looking men with loyalty and emotional availability.

Many averagely attractive women also say they find such relationships comforting. They experience fewer insecurities about their own appearance. Additionally, they are less likely to compare themselves with other women. As a result, they often feel more confident within the relationship.

What Really Strengthens Relationships

Psychologists have also argued that physical attraction is only one factor in mate selection. Relationship satisfaction depends more on qualities such as kindness, trust, emotional intelligence, communication, and mutual attraction.
Several studies have shown that couples who prioritize these qualities often engage in stronger and longer-lasting relationships than those who rely mainly on physical attraction.

Are We Stereotyped?

On the other side of the coin, society has shaped many people’s expectations from childhood. Growing up, the media has fed us with the vision in mind that the beautiful gets married to the handsome guy.

Consequently, many people struggle to imagine attractive women choosing men who do not fit conventional beauty standards (the ugly-looking ones).

We are thus not open-minded to accept and allow nature to take its course because the ugly-looking men ought to marry as well, don’t they?

Furthermore, researchers have found that people often seek partners who make them feel emotionally secure. Emotional safety encourages trust and relationship satisfaction.

Therefore, many women eventually prioritize character over facial features. This shift often becomes stronger with age and relationship experience.

A blogger on a site called Medium said,

“Many women — especially those who are emotionally intelligent, self-aware, and past surface-level dating — start to value different things. Not because they’re “settling,” but because they’ve grown. They’ve had their fill of hot guys with zero listening skills, inflated egos, or emotional unavailability.”

This observation highlights that some women become less interested in appearance after gaining dating experience. Instead, they focus on qualities that sustain healthy relationships.

It also suggests that some good-looking men may become too selfish to handle relationships as compared to their ugly-looking counterparts.

What Makes the Ugly-Looking Men Win the Higher Score?

Research in evolutionary psychology suggests that women evaluate partners using multiple traits rather than appearance alone.

Factors such as reliability, ambition, intelligence, stability, and willingness to invest in a relationship frequently influence partner choice. Consequently, a man’s physical attractiveness may become less important when other desirable qualities are present.

Are Men Really Ugly?

Finally, the term ugly is generally subjective and relative. What one lady finds ugly does not necessarily place the person in that bracket. Beauty standards differ across cultures, communities, and individuals. Therefore, no universal definition of attractiveness exists.

Furthermore, You’ve probably heard this before, but it’s true: someone can grow more or less attractive depending on their energy.

You meet a man today, and he is an ugly-looking man, but the more you interact, the chemistry builds up and you just see them differently. Psychologists describe this phenomenon as the “mere exposure effect.”

The more positive interactions people have, the more attractive they often perceive each other. Confidence, humor, kindness, and emotional warmth can significantly increase perceived attractiveness over time.

OkCupid Research

Moreover, research was done on a dating app called OkCupid, whereby it finds this ranking unfair, since some of the photos of the said “unattractive men” were actually good-looking.

“Females of OkCupid, we site founders say to you: ouch! Paradoxically, it seems it’s women, not men, who have unrealistic standards for the “average” member of the opposite sex.”

The findings revealed an interesting contradiction. Women often rated men’s appearances harshly during initial assessment.

Moreover, the women in the app voted that most of the men in the app are ugly-looking, whereas they still go on to send them messages.

“As you can see from the gray line, women rate an incredible 80% of guys as worse-looking than medium. Very harsh. However, the average-looking woman has convinced herself that the vast majority of males aren’t good enough for her, but she then goes right out and messages them anyway.”

Researchers explained that this behavior demonstrates how attraction develops beyond first impressions. Women may dismiss a photograph but become interested after reading a profile or discovering shared values.

Therefore, dating decisions involve much more than facial attractiveness alone.

Ultimately, attractive women do not always choose ugly-looking men because they are lowering their standards. Instead, many deliberately prioritize emotional maturity, reliability, shared values, and genuine compatibility.

Physical appearance may attract initial attention, but character often determines whether a relationship lasts. Which brings us to the question: is it hypergamy, or are men just ugly?
