At least ten people, including a child, have been confirmed dead following a devastating road accident at Bw’arani near Ekerenyo along the Kericho-Nyamira highway after a collision between a Quaser Shuttle public service vehicle (PSV) and a heavy goods trailer.

The accident occurred on Saturday, December 13, 2025, night, resulting in a devastating loss, with the majority of the Shuttle’s occupants perishing on the scene.

Only two passengers, who are said to be at the back of the ill-fated Quaser Shuttle, survived the crash.

According to preliminary reports from the scene, the two survivors were seated in the last row of the PSV.

The two were rushed to a nearby hospital, where they are currently receiving treatment for serious injuries.

This comes just a day after the Former Lugari Member of Parliament, Cyrus Shakhalaga Jirongo, best known for his leadership of the controversial Youth for Kanu ’92 (YK92) movement that supported President Daniel Arap Moi’s re-election campaign in 1992, died of an accident on Saturday morning at Karai along the Nakuru Nairobi Highway.

The tragic incident has reignited a fierce public debate on the dangers of night travel for heavy commercial and passenger vehicles, with some demanding a ban on night travel.

A citizen-on-comment circulating widely on the X platform (formerly Twitter) articulated the growing frustration and fear among road users.

“How much would Kenya lose by stopping night travel for buses and trailers, compared to the cost in lives and property, and the cover it gives smugglers? A ban would shift business to trains, moving goods and passengers more safely, easing pressure on our roads, and keeping them in better shape. Yes, some areas lack railway service, but that’s a small sacrifice compared to saving lives,” Carlmaury said.

Carlmaury added that she has travelled at night, and according to him, survival at night feels like a gamble, adding that it is chaos sharing the road with speeding trailers and buses.

“I’ve driven at night from Mombasa to Nairobi and again to Busia, and I can tell you, it’s chaos sharing the road with speeding trailers and buses,” Carlmaury said.

She added, “You must stay razor-sharp, ready to swerve, and driving a car powerful enough to overtake in seconds, preferably do 0-60 miles in less than 5 seconds. With our Subbie clocking 8.7 seconds from 0 to 60 miles, we struggled. At night, survival feels like a gamble.”

Police and traffic enforcement officers have launched an immediate investigation into the cause of the collision.
