A video has emerged showing an alleged gun incident that occurred on January 3, 2026, at Cedars Lebanese Restaurant in Nairobi’s Kilimani area, involving Embakasi East MP Babu Owino and Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai.

In the CCTV footage seen by Hivileo, at about 4:01 pm, Babu Owino is seen rising from his seat and walking towards a nearby table where Robert Alai was seated with six other men. Babu is seen greeting the people at the table before approaching Alai. Initially, the two exchange warm greetings and engage in a brief conversation.

However, about two minutes into the footage, the interaction turns hostile after an exchange of words, with Alai allegedly pushing Owino. Seconds later, a physical scuffle breaks out as onlookers watch.

The situation escalates further when Alai is seen removing an item from his pocket, believed to be a firearm, and cocking it, prompting customers to flee the area in panic. The weapon is later taken away by a man believed to be a police officer who was dressed in civilian clothes.

At around 4:09 pm, there was still a heated argument between Alai and Babu, prompting a female patron to attempt to calm the situation.

Instead, Alai allegedly turns hostile toward her, striking her while those nearby moved in to shield her, with other customers observing.

The altercation proceeds to another part of the restaurant at around 4:10 pm, with the struggle lasting almost two more minutes.

The two men are later seen sitting and talking, after which Alai is caught on camera throwing an object toward Owino. Owino subsequently leaves the premises through the main entrance.

Kilimani Sub-County Police Commander Patricia Yegon later confirmed that the firearm was confiscated and is being held as evidence at Kilimani Police Station.

Alai Denies Drawing Gun

Following the incident, Babu Owino issued a statement saying he had been at the restaurant for a private meeting with a senior clergyman.

As he was leaving, he greeted a nearby group that included Alai, who allegedly accused him of orchestrating social media attacks against his wife.

Owino denied the accusation, stating that he does not know Alai’s wife and does not involve family members in politics. He claimed Alai became aggressive, pushed him, drew a pistol, struck him on the chest and jaw with it, and later poured water on his face.

“Moments later, he again turned hostile, picked a glass of water from the table, and poured it on my face. By then, a crowd had gathered, disturbed by his conduct. Upon witnessing this escalation and wishing to avoid any physical confrontation, I immediately left the premises and reported the matter at Kilimani Police Station,” Owino said.

On his part, Robert Alai denied drawing or brandishing the gun.

Speaking to TV47, he acknowledged that he was armed but claimed Owino approached him aggressively and repeatedly pushed his head despite requests to stop.

He said he only stood up to push Owino back and insisted the firearm was never drawn.

Alai described the incident as a personal misunderstanding rather than a political dispute and said he had also reported the matter to the police.

The case has since been handed over to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) for further investigations.
