Two Iranian nationals are in police custody in Thika following what detectives have described as a “stupefying incident” that allegedly saw a Kenyan citizen lose Sh15,000 through deception.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) confirmed the arrest, noting that the suspects were apprehended after alert members of the public raised an alarm.

According to investigators, the suspects were identified as 56-year-old Heidari Mansoior Eslam and his 40-year-old accomplice, Babaei Ahmad Mirzaaga.

The two were arrested after drawing suspicion while posing as customers in a local mobile phone shop within Thika town.

Detectives said their behaviour closely matched that of individuals linked to a similar incident reported a month earlier.

“The duo had been weaving their web of deception in a local mobile shop,” the DCI stated, adding that the shopkeeper’s vigilance proved critical in unraveling the case.

The shop attendant reportedly became uneasy when the two men pretended to be interested in purchasing a mobile phone, prompting him to recall a previous theft reported nearby.

Shopkeepers Play Key Role in Arrest

Police said the shopkeeper acted swiftly by contacting a fellow trader whose shop had allegedly been targeted earlier.

Upon arrival, the second shopkeeper positively identified the two foreigners as the individuals who had allegedly defrauded him.

“He was indeed a victim of their stupefying tactics, which had left him 15,000 shillings poorer a month ago,” the DCI noted in a statement.

This identification prompted the traders to confront the suspects, raising concerns among other members of the public.

Triggering an Alarm and Police Action

News of this quickly spread, and soon a crowd began to form, with members of the public threatening to take the law into their own hands.

Police said tensions escalated rapidly before officers intervened.

“The alarm was raised, and soon the public rallied, eyeing the suspects with fury,” the DCI said.

Law enforcement officers arrived in time to rescue the two men from what detectives described as a potential mob injustice, restoring calm to the area.

Suspects Held at Thika Police Station

Following their rescue, the two Iranian nationals were escorted to Thika Police Station, where they are currently being held.

Detectives said the suspects are undergoing processing as investigations continue.

“Now, the foreigners find themselves cooling their heels at Thika Police Station, as they undergo the necessary processing ahead of their arraignment,” the DCI confirmed.
