CCTV footage circulating on social media that has since gone viral shows a police officer allegedly shooting a 40-year-old businessman at Rubis Petrol Station in Karatina town, Nyeri County. The incident occurred late at night on January 18, 2026.
The three-minute footage reportedly captures two officers armed with AK-47 rifles approaching the businessman, who was wearing a white shirt and grey jeans.
The video shows the officers following him while an argument appears to take place. As the civilian moved toward the exit, one officer is seen pushing him to the ground while the other allegedly fires the gun.
According to the CCTV timeline, the shooting occurred around 11:10 p.m. Following the incident, the officers reportedly left the man lying on the ground as bystanders gathered and called for help.
The killing has sparked widespread condemnation, with Kenyans demanding accountability for the police officers involved.
A social media user, by the name Kijana ya Mwingi, described the incident as very unfortunate.
“What kind of country is this? Police find a young man peacefully working at a petrol station and shoot him dead on the spot. Why kill an unarmed, innocent youth? This happened in Karatina, Nyeri. Young people are being eliminated one by one. This is heartbreaking.”

Another user, Ondelo, added:
“I spoke about the need for on-the-spot discipline for police officers because the current accountability system has completely failed. For over 30 years, Kenyan police have killed more Kenyans than terrorists ever have, yet almost no one is held responsible.”
So far, Administration Police Constable Peter Wamiti, allegedly the officer who fired the shot, has been arrested and will remain in custody for 14 days while the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) continues its investigation.
He appeared before Senior Resident Magistrate Mary Gituma at the Nyeri Law Courts, where the prosecution had sought a 21-day detention.

The court granted a 14-day custodial order, citing concerns over the officer’s safety amid public outrage and the risk of witness interference.
“While the officer may be admitted to bail or bond, I don’t find that to be appropriate at this stage for the above reasons,” the court noted.
This incident comes days after several police officers in Nandi County were called out by Kenyans, including Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen, for assaulting youth who were playing pool at a local joint.
