The suspect, identified as Mutembei Kola, was the leader of a criminal gang linked to a series of violent incidents in the area.

The incident occurred at around 2:00 a.m. when a joint patrol team from Laare Police Station, comprising officers from the Kenya Police Service (KPS) and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), encountered a group of about five men during a routine patrol.
