Detectives in Makindu have arrested two men suspected of being behind a string of highway motor vehicle thefts.

In a statement on Saturday, September 27, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said the suspects, identified as Joseph Katee Nzainga and Nelson Musyoki Mbidyo, are accused of orchestrating robberies targeting vehicles headed to Uganda as well as unregistered cars bearing Kenya Dealers (KD) plates.

In one incident on August 28, 2025, the pair allegedly robbed a black Toyota Harrier with KD plates from a motorist in the Makindu area.

DCI said the two were arrested along the Mombasa-Nairobi and several items were recovered from them.

“Following their arrest along the Mombasa-Nairobi highway, detectives recovered several items, including a set of registration plates (KDR 885Z), three ID cards belonging to different people, five mobile phones, a wheel spanner, and other assorted items,” DCI said.

The two are currently in custody as they undergo processing, awaiting their court appearance.

DCI Arrests Stock Theft Suspects

Earlier, DCI Detectives arrested three suspects believed to be behind a cross-county stock theft syndicate operating in Embu and Kirinyaga.

The operation began with the arrest of Alex Mwangi and Anthony Macharia in Embu, where officers impounded a Toyota Sienta, the vehicle allegedly used to ferry stolen animals under the cover of darkness.

The dragnet then extended to Kerugoya town, where detectives apprehended Mercy Nyaguthi Njiru, the receiver of stolen livestock.

A search of her premises led to the recovery of a heifer suspected to have been stolen from Kianjoma, a Friesian cow believed to have been stolen from Karatina, ten goats, five kids, and one sheep.

“All three suspects are currently in custody, undergoing processing, and pending arraignment,” DCI said.
