Kenya Met Lists Regions Set for Heavy Rainfall in a Five-Day Weather Forecast

Share

Rainfall is expected in various parts of Kenya over the coming five days, with warnings from the country’s meteorology department about isolated heavy rains that might affect economic activities.

According to the weather forecast issued by the Kenya Meteorological Department, rain is expected from April 17, 2026 through April 21, 2026.

The department indicates that multiple regions, including the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Southeastern Lowlands, the Coast, and Northeastern Kenya, should prepare for varying rainfall intensities.

The agency states that “rainfall is expected to continue in some parts” of these regions throughout the forecast period.

Meteorologists have also highlighted their worry about the weather being severe in some regions, suggesting that, “heavy rains are expected to be isolated in some parts of the Rift Valley, Lake Victoria Basin, and Northeastern Kenya.”

These instances of severe weather might increase the possibility of floods occurring.

Regional Weather Patterns and Temperature Variations

In the Highlands West of the Rift Valley and the Lake Victoria Basin, residents should expect a mix of sunny intervals and rainfall.

The forecast notes “showers and thunderstorms over several places”, particularly in the afternoons at the start of the period, gradually reducing in intensity towards midweek.

Temperatures in these areas are expected to peak at around 30°C during the day, with cooler nights dropping to as low as 10°C.

As for the Highlands East of the Rift Valley region, which comprises Nairobi and adjacent counties, the forecast indicates alternating rain showers moving to brighter skies.

The prediction emphasizes “showers over a number of places” at the onset of the forecast period, then “showers over some places” later on.

Average daytime temperatures will range from 27°C to 29°C.

Northern and Coastal Areas Are Hot and Receiving Intermittent Rain

In Northwestern Kenya, in counties like Turkana and Samburu, the weather is expected to stay mainly hot and dry with intermittent rains.

This section forecasts “sunny intervals prevailing widely,” with temperatures rising up to 38°C.

Northeastern counties like Wajir, Mandera, and Garissa, on the other hand, are going to experience rainfall, but much lighter than before.

This is highlighted as “rain over a few places in the morning” and “showers over a few places in the afternoon and night,” indicating less intense precipitation.

For the areas near the sea, like Mombasa and Kilifi, humidity is experienced together with showers both during day and night.

The part above mentions “showers over a few places” and temperatures ranging from 32°C to 34°C.”

Rainfall Terminology, Interpretation and Advisory

In the advisory, the meteorological department has stressed the importance of interpreting the forecast with care in connection with the day-to-day forecasts.

This is because the terms ‘light,’ ‘moderate,’ and ‘heavy’ refer to the amounts of rainfall, and in the case of heavy rainfall, it is 21 mm to 50 mm per 24 hours.

Further, in terms of location, terms like “few places” and “several places” also convey the extent to which an area receives rainfall.

This is important in order to help people plan accordingly.

In the advisory, it has been stated that “this five-day forecast should be used in connection with the daily (24-hour) forecast.”
