What Happens if Manchester City and Arsenal Finish Level on Points and Goal Difference?

Share

The Premier League title race between Manchester City and Arsenal is incredibly close, with both teams separated by only fine margins at the top of the table.

As the season heads into its final stages, it is becoming increasingly likely that they could finish level on points.

If that happens, the Premier League applies a clear set of tie-break rules to decide which team is crowned champions.

Arsenal and City both have a goal difference of +37

In terms of goals scored, Manchester City has 66 while Arsenal has 63.

1.Goal difference

If two teams finish with the same number of points, the first deciding factor is the goal difference.

This is calculated by subtracting goals conceded from goals scored over the entire season.

Both Manchester City and Arsenal are currently very close in this area, meaning goal difference alone may not be enough to separate them if the race remains this tight.

2. Goals scored

If goal difference is also identical, the next criterion is total goals scored in the league season. The team with more goals takes the higher position.

At the moment, Manchester City have scored slightly more goals than Arsenal, which would currently give them the edge if both teams finished level on points and goal difference.

3. Head-to-head record

If both points, goal difference, and goals scored are identical, the Premier League looks at head-to-head results between the two teams.

This considers the matches played between Arsenal and Manchester City during the season.

In a tight race, this could become a decisive factor, although it is rarely needed in practice.

4.Head-to-head away goals

If the head-to-head record is still level, away goals scored in those head-to-head matches are considered. This is an even deeper statistical measure and is very unlikely to be required.

5. Play-off match

If all the above criteria still cannot separate the teams, the Premier League rulebook allows for a one-off play-off match at a neutral venue.

This scenario is extremely unlikely and has never been used to decide a Premier League title.
