All 36 people on board a passenger aircraft that veered off the runway during landing and ended up in nearby thickets were safely evacuated, authorities have confirmed.
The aircraft, operated by Elevation Beyond Borders (EBB), reportedly failed to stop upon touchdown and skidded off the runway, breaking through a perimeter fence before coming to rest in thick bushes.
Police said no injuries were reported in the incident.
All passengers and crew members were accounted for following the crash landing at an airstrip in Mandera.
“There were 36 people on board, and none suffered injuries. They were most shaken but safe,” Mandera County Police Commander Robinson Ndiwa said of the incident, which took place at around 8:30 am local time.
Security teams secured the scene as investigations into what went wrong began.
Officials said the plane sustained significant damage during the incident.
However, emergency response teams moved swiftly to evacuate everyone safely.
The flight had departed from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and was scheduled to land in Mandera after a routine two-hour journey.
Aircraft on this route often use either JKIA or Wilson Airport before landing at the Mandera military airstrip.
Concerns have emerged over the safety of the airstrip, which has a relatively short runway.
Local leaders have repeatedly called for the construction of a modern airport in the region to improve safety and handle increasing air traffic.
