Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have arrested two suspects and recovered a firearm and a machete during a targeted operation in Kisumu County.
In a statement released on April 26 2026, DCI said the operation was conducted by a team of detectives from its headquarters.
The detectives were acting on intelligence which was regarding suspected criminal activity along the Kisumu Busia Highway.
The DCI officers planned on a strategic ambush along the busy highway, which is a key road that links western Kenya to the Busia border.
After a period of surveillance, the detectives intercepted a black Toyota Prado, registration number KCB 411A, which had two male occupants on board.
Officers recovered a Phantom pistol after conducting a search on the suspicious vehicle.

The police also recovered a machete concealed in a black sheath, as well as three mobile phones.
DCI believes the items could possibly be linked to a criminal activity, though further forensic analysis is expected to establish their exact use.
The suspects were identified as Evans Otieno Ongere and Abel Onyango Owuor, who were taken into custody.
They were taken to Maseno Police Station, where they remain in custody pending processing and arraignment in court.
The recovered firearm, the machete, the mobile phones, and the vehicle have been detained as exhibits and evidence to support the ongoing investigations.
The DCI said the operation forms part of their efforts to combat the ownership of illegal firearms and related criminal activities in the entire region.
Authorities have, in recent months, intensified intelligence-led operations targeting individuals suspected of engaging in violent crime along major highways.

Investigations into the matter are ongoing, with detectives expected to establish the origin of the firearm and whether the suspects are linked to a wider criminal network.
The DCI continues urging Kenyans to report any suspicious activities or even cromes to them through their toll-free number on their page.
