A 52-year-old man is under police surveillance at Migori County Referral Hospital after being in a road accident, which led to the discovery of a large consignment of bhang in Rongo Sub-County.
According to a report by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the suspect, who is identified as Samson Ayiera Chacha, was driving a trailer, registration number KBS 548H, on April 24, 2026, when he lost control of the vehicle and fell into River Kuja.
Samson sustained serious injuries in the crash and was rescued by members of the public who responded to the accident scene before rushing him to the hospital for treatment.
Authorities later conducted a recovery operation to retrieve the trailer from the river Kuja.
The trailer was then towed to Kamagambo Police Station, where a thorough inspection revealed that it was transporting a large quantity of bhang.
Anti-Narcotics officers from Isebania were called in to take over the investigation.
DCI says preliminary findings indicate that the trailer was carrying 1,137.8 kilogrammes of bhang with an estimated street value of Ksh 34,134,000.
