Kenya Red Cross Issues Nationwide Flood Update

Heavy rainfall hitting several parts of the country has triggered flooding, which has displaced households and disrupted normal activities across multiple counties, according to the Kenya Red Cross.

In a statement dated April 29 2026, the Kenya Red Cross has reported that floodwaters and fast moving waters from rainfall have affected parts of Nairobi, Machakos County, Kajiado County, Mombasa, Kwale County and Lamu County.

In Nairobi’s Utawala area, three people were safely rescued after being stranded in floodwaters as emergency teams responded to rising water levels.

Across Nairobi, 650 households have been affected in estates including Jacaranda, Sisal, Milimani, Motomoto and Riara, highlighting the widespread impact of the rains on residential areas.

Family Evacuated

In Mavoko, Machakos County, a family of four was evacuated after their home was submerged by floodwaters.

Meanwhile, in Kajiado North within Kajiado County, about 100 households have been affected.

Residents are struggling with with waterlogged homes and damaged property.

At the Coast, the situation remains relatively contained but concerning.

Mombasa County

In Likoni, Mombasa, at least one household has been affected by flooding linked to the ongoing heavy rains.

The Kenya Red Cross Society further warned that water levels along the Tana River are continuing to rise.

This poses a potential risk to the communities living downstream.

Red cross has noted that Masinga Dam has reached its full capacity and it is a risk to those who are living in the sorrounding areas.

There are controlled spillovers currently underway in order to manage excess water and prevent households from being affected.

Red Cross Urges Public To Take Precaution Measures

Red Cross has urged communities living downstream of the dam and along the river basin to remain vigilant and take precautionary measures for the situation.

Emergency response teams from the Red Cross are currently on the ground conducting assessments.

Red Cross has said it is also providing support to the affected families and coordinating response efforts with required agencies.
