Flood Risk Escalates as NPS Issues Nationwide Safety Advisory Over Heavy Rains

Share

The National Police Service (NPS) issued a safety advisory on April 29, 2026, in coordination with other government agencies, as heavy rains continue to disrupt several parts of the country.

The advisory highlights rising risks linked to flooding, transport disruption and fast-changing weather conditions that may endanger lives and property.

First, the advisory warns that several regions now face increased flood risk due to rising river levels.

In Nairobi, authorities report swelling water levels in the Nairobi, Mathare, Ngong, Kamiti and Athi rivers. These rivers feed into the Athi River system, which currently flows at critically high levels. As a result, the risk of overflow continues to rise.

“The National Police Service, in coordination with other government agencies, remains on high alert as persistent heavy rains continue to affect several parts of the country,” NPS stated.

It further added that the situation has already caused significant disruption and damage. Therefore, the service urges the public to stay alert.

Heightened Flood Risk in Downstream Areas

Additionally, authorities warned that downstream communities face danger even when rainfall remains low in their areas. Floodwaters can move quickly and trigger sudden flooding.

“Communities downstream face a heightened risk of flooding, even in areas where rainfall may appear minimal,” the advisory stated.

Therefore, residents along rivers should remain extra cautious.

Meanwhile, transport systems continue to struggle across affected regions. Heavy rains have flooded roads and reduced visibility.

In addition, waterlogging now slows movement for both motorists and pedestrians. Some routes may also become impassable if rains continue.

Public Safety Measures

Because of the worsening conditions, the NPS urges residents to act carefully. It advised people to avoid walking or driving through moving water. Even shallow currents can sweep away vehicles or individuals. In addition, the service encourages the public to follow weather updates from official agencies.

Furthermore, residents in flood-prone areas should move to higher ground when necessary. Authorities stress that early action can save lives and reduce harm during sudden floods.

Finally, the National Police Service reaffirmed its commitment to protect lives and property during the ongoing emergency. It asked the public to call 999 or 911 in emergencies. Alternatively, people can report incidents through #FichuaKwaDCI on 0800 722 203 (toll-free) or WhatsApp 0709 570 000.
