Motorists Brace for Disruptions as KeNHA Shuts Part of Major Highway

The Kenya National Highways Authority has made an announcement that part of the Uhuru Highway will be temporarily closed off in order to pave the way for planned highway repairs.

According to a statement published by the highways body on April 30, 2026, the specific stretch to be cordoned off will run from the Museum Hill Interchange to the Westlands Roundabout via the A8 Road.

The closure is expected to affect traffic on the nights of Thursday, May 7, 2026, and Friday, May 8, 2026.

According to KeNHA, the closure will be effected between 10.00 pm and 5.00 am on both nights to facilitate the planned road maintenance exercise aimed at improving the condition of the busy highway section.

“The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) notifies the public that a section of Uhuru Highway (A8 Road) between Museum Hill Interchange and Westlands Roundabout will be temporarily closed on Thursday, May 7, 2026, and Friday, May 8, 2026, between 10.00 pm and 5.00 am,” the notice stated.

Alternative Routes for Nakuru and Mombasa Bound Traffic

KeNHA advised motorists travelling toward Nakuru through Uhuru Highway and Chiromo Road to use alternative diversion routes during the closure period.

The authority said motorists heading in the Nakuru-bound direction can access their destinations through Nyerere Road, Arboretum Drive, Westlands Ring Road and the Nairobi Expressway.

“This closure is to allow for highway maintenance works on the road section,” KeNHA explained.

The agency further directed motorists intending to join Uhuru Highway on the Mombasa-bound side to consider using Parklands Ring Road, Ojijo Road, Kipande Road, Limuru Road, University Way and the Nairobi Expressway to avoid congestion and delays.

“Further, motorists intending to join Uhuru Highway (Mombasa bound), can use alternative routes such as Parklands Ring Road, Ojijo Road, Kipande Road, Limuru Road, University Way and the Nairobi Expressway,” the authority said.

Motorists Urged to Cooperate With Traffic Officers

KeNHA called on road users to observe the temporary traffic management measures that will be implemented throughout the maintenance exercise.

The authority urged motorists to cooperate with police officers and traffic marshals who will be deployed along the affected sections and diversion routes to guide movement and ensure smooth traffic flow.

“Motorists are advised to follow the proposed traffic management plan as well as cooperate with the police and traffic marshals on site,” the notice added.

The temporary closure is expected to impact thousands of motorists who use the Uhuru Highway corridor nightly, particularly long-distance drivers and city commuters connecting between Nairobi’s central business district and the Westlands area.

KeNHA, however, assured road users that the disruption will only last during the scheduled maintenance hours and that normal traffic operations will resume immediately after completion of the works.

“Normal traffic operations on the road will be restored upon completion of the works,” the authority stated.
