Motorists commuting between Nairobi’s Central Business District and Westlands will access part of the Nairobi Expressway free of charge for two nights to ease congestion caused by ongoing road construction works along Waiyaki Way.
The temporary waiver, announced by the Nairobi Expressway operator on Thursday, May 7, will apply during overnight hours on Thursday and Friday between 9pm and 6am.
According to the operator, the intervention is intended to minimise traffic build-up during scheduled night works along Waiyaki Way, particularly around the stretch linking the Global Trade Centre (GTC) area and ICEA Lion.
“To facilitate ongoing construction along Waiyaki Way, a temporary toll-free arrangement on the Nairobi Expressway will be implemented from Thursday, May 7, 9pm to 6am and Friday, May 8, 9pm to 6am,” the company stated.
Under the new traffic plan, drivers will only enjoy free passage when entering the expressway through the Haile Selassie entrance near Bunyala Roundabout and exiting at the Westlands exit.
The operator explained that the waiver was specifically designed to assist motorists affected by expected disruptions around the GTC and ICEA Lion section, where heavy night construction activities are underway.
“The move is aimed at facilitating traffic flow during night works on Waiyaki Way, specifically on the stretch between GTC and the ICEA Lion area, where construction activities are projected to cause traffic disruption,” the statement added.

The company, however, clarified that the toll exemption would not apply across the entire expressway network, warning motorists that normal charges would remain in force at all other entry and exit stations.
“Please note that this toll-free arrangement only applies to vehicles entering from the mentioned stations. All other toll stations and routes will continue to operate under the normal tolling rules,” it added.
Motorists using the route during the two-night period have also been advised to observe traffic signs and cooperate with marshals who will be stationed along the affected areas to manage vehicle movement and diversions.
The temporary measure comes as construction activities intensify along Waiyaki Way under the ongoing expansion of the A8 Road project being undertaken by the Kenya National Highways Authority.

The project includes the upgrade of the James Gichuru-Rironi section into a six-lane highway aimed at easing chronic congestion along the busy route linking Nairobi to its western suburbs and neighbouring counties.
In addition to the carriageway expansion, contractors are also constructing new interchanges at Uthiru and Kangemi to improve connectivity and traffic flow once the project is completed.
