A rescue operation was launched on the morning of May 15 after a train collided with a school bus carrying pupils along the Gilgil–Nyahururu road in Nakuru County.
According to reports, the bus belonging to Teresia School was crossing a railway line in the Gilgil area when the train rammed into it and pushed it a short distance, triggering panic among pupils and nearby residents.
Emergency responders, police officers, and members of the public quickly arrived at the scene to assist in rescue operations.
They worked to evacuate the injured pupils and provide immediate medical attention as efforts to secure the area continued.
Authorities confirmed that no fatalities had been reported at the time of the incident.
However, several learners sustained injuries and were taken to hospital for treatment although the extent of the injuries is yet to be fully established.
Meanwhile, police have since launched investigations to establish the exact cause of the collision, including whether the bus driver observed railway crossing safety procedures before attempting to cross the tracks.
The accident caused temporary traffic disruption along the busy Gilgil-Nyahururu road as rescue operations and clearance efforts continued.
This development comes months after eight people died after a train rammed into a Kenya Pipeline company bus near the Morendat training and conference centre(MTCC) in Naivasha, Nakuru County.
A police report revealed that the tragic incident occurred as the KPC bus, which was ferrying employees from the MTCC after a morning shift, attempted to cross the railway line.
As a result, in a statement, the Kenya Railways Corporation issued a warning to members of the public, including motorists, urging them to be vigilant when approaching railway crossings.
“”Motorists and the general public are advised to take caution when crossing the railway line at level crossings to avoid collision with approaching trains,” read part of the statement.
