The National Police Service (NPS) has assured Kenyans of adequate security ahead of the planned matatu strike on Monday, May 18, urging Kenyans to continue with their daily activities without any fear.
In a statement released on May 17, 2026, NPS said it had taken note of reports indicating that a section of public service vehicle operators had planned a strike due to fuel prices.
However, the NPS stated that the planned strike was being organized by only a minority of operators within the transport sector.
According to the statement, the majority of stakeholders in the transport sector have expressed commitment to maintaining normal operations and ensuring that transport services continue without any interruption.
“NPS has noted reports of a planned matatu strike on Monday, 18 May, organized by a minority of matatu operators and a section of public service transport actors. The majority of stakeholders in the transport sector remain committed to conducting their business without interruption.
This position has been reinforced by the United Transport Association of Kenya (UTAK), which has distanced itself from the strike by issuing a comprehensive statement to that effect,” reads part of the statement.

The NPS said security measures have been enhanced across the country to ensure public order and safety during the planned demonstrations.
The statement further warned that any individuals who will engage in disruptive activities or acts that threaten peace and security would face firm action in accordance with the law.
“The public is urged to remain calm, continue with their daily activities, and cooperate with law enforcement officers,” the statement read.
The police also encouraged citizens to report any incidents or security concerns through the emergency communication channels.
Kenyans were also advised that they could anonymously share any information with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations through their toll free numbers.
The statement comes amid concerns that the planned strike could disrupt transport services in major towns and cities.
This is particularly in Nairobi, where matatus remain the primary mode of public transport for thousands of commuters.
