How the Name “Oga Obinna” Started

The name “Oga Obinna” was inspired by the Nigerian movie Nothing for Nothing.

Before adopting the stage name, he used to perform as “Obinna the Joker.” His love for Nigerian movies and talent in mimicking accents helped him develop the Nigerian-inspired character that later became his entertainment brand.

Hustles Before Fame

Before fame, Obinna did several casual jobs after moving to Nairobi around 2009 as he struggled to survive while chasing his entertainment dream.

He worked as a house cleaner and washed clothes for people, offloaded 90-kilogram maize bags in warehouses, and also worked as an office messenger.

At some point, he ventured into motorbike transport work while continuing to perform in comedy clubs and small entertainment events in Nairobi.

He has previously credited his time at Greenwall International, where he worked as an office messenger, as one of the turning points in his life. During that period, he learned how to ride a motorbike and acquired his first driving licence.

Career Journey

Obinna’s breakthrough came after performing at comedy clubs alongside comedians such as Eric Omondi and Fred Omondi.

He later secured an internship at QFM under Nation Media Group, where he hosted late-night graveyard radio shows, earning about Ksh10,000.

He later joined Easy FM, where his Nigerian-accent character became popular among listeners through The Home Run show alongside Brian Oduor and Cupid.

Obinna later landed a hosting role on Break Time Show, aired on NTV alongside media personality Nice Githinji. The youth show took him across the country, visiting schools and helped grow his popularity.

He also co-hosted the comedy programme Offside Show on NTV alongside comedian Otoyo.

Before leaving Nation FM, he co-hosted an evening drive show with Antoneosoul.

He later moved to Kiss FM, where he co-hosted the breakfast show alongside Kamene Goro.

It was during his time at Kiss FM that he began focusing heavily on digital content creation.
