HELB Loan Repayment Penalties and How to Avoid Them
Share
The Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) requires beneficiaries to begin repaying their loans after completing their studies.
However, many graduates fail to keep up with repayments, often due to unemployment or financial challenges.
If left unpaid, HELB loans can incur a monthly penalty of Ksh 5,000, increasing the amount initially owed.
Therefore, as these penalties accumulate, they make it even more difficult for borrowers to clear their outstanding balances.
How to Avoid HELB Penalties
According to HELB, one can avoid penalties by making a payment as soon as the loan becomes due.
The board notes that the system stops charging the monthly penalty when it detects a payment on the account.
This shows that even borrowers who are unemployed or earning irregular income can avoid additional penalties by making small contributions toward their loan.
Additionally, HELB highlights that consistent payments can help borrowers who have accumulated penalties qualify for penalty waivers.

Keep Your Contact Information Updated
The board further says that keeping contact information updated helps you to receive important notifications, statements, and repayment reminders.
Graduates are required to ensure they have updated phone numbers, email addresses, and employment details to inform them of their loan status.

Monitor Your Loan Balance Regularly
The board argues that checking your loan statement regularly can help you track your repayments, identify any penalties that may have been applied, and ensure all payments have been correctly credited to your account.
Borrowers are advised to always make repayments through approved HELB payment methods to reduce the risk of payment errors and ensure that your account is updated promptly.
