SHA Under Spotlight as Ministry of Health Clarifies Services After Viral Garissa Incident

The Ministry of Health has issued a statement responding to public concerns following a widely shared video involving the Governor of Garissa and a young woman who was reportedly seeking medical assistance while ill.

In the statement dated June 7, 2026, the ministry said it had taken note of the concerns raised by the public and sought to clarify the status of the Social Health Authority (SHA).

“The Ministry wishes to reaffirm that the Social Health Authority (SHA) remains a key pillar of Kenya’s Universal Health Coverage agenda and continues to facilitate access to healthcare services for millions of Kenyans across the country.”

The ministry said comments made in the video had sparked public debate about the effectiveness and status of SHA services.

However, it assured Kenyans that the programme remains active and committed to delivering affordable healthcare services.

“The Ministry therefore wishes to assure all Kenyans that SHA remains operational and committed to ensuring affordable and accessible healthcare services.”

Ministry of Health : Garissa County Has Received Ksh 1.65 Billion

According to the Ministry of Health, Garissa County has received substantial funding through various SHA programmes.

The funds disbursed include:

SHA Funding Allocated to Garissa County

  • SHIF: Ksh 1,264,421,720.52
  • PHC: Ksh 155,985,814.88
  • ECCIF: Ksh 10,179,295.00
  • POMSF: Ksh 220,835,005.19

Total: Ksh 1,651,421,835.59

The ministry said the funds are intended to strengthen healthcare services and improve access to quality medical care for residents of Garissa County.

“These resources are intended to strengthen healthcare delivery and improve access to quality medical services for the people of Garissa County.”

Call for Dignity and Accurate Information

The ministry also emphasized the need for all patients to be treated with dignity and respect, regardless of their social or economic status.

Officials noted that public confidence in healthcare reforms depends on accurate information and responsible leadership.

“Every Kenyan seeking healthcare services deserves to be treated with dignity, compassion, and respect, regardless of their social or economic circumstances.”

Ministry Emphasizes Commitment

The Ministry of Health said it will continue working closely with county governments and other stakeholders to ensure healthcare services reach all citizens.

The statement was signed by Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale, who stated the government’s commitment to improving access to healthcare across the country.

“The Ministry remains committed to working with county governments and all stakeholders to ensure that healthcare services reach every Kenyan and that no citizen is left behind.”
