As the FIFA World Cup 2026 gets underway in the United States, Canada and Mexico, Nairobi is gearing up for days of football action with the expectation that sports bars, fan areas and entertainment centers will be packed with enthusiastic fans ready to catch the most watched sports event ever.
This development will no doubt be cheered after the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) confirmed that it will broadcast the event free-to-air in what has been hailed as a major victory for the people of Kenya after the government intervened to acquire broadcasting rights for the event.
It means millions of Kenyans will now have an opportunity to view the games at no cost to them since there will be no worries of paying hefty subscription fees to cable service providers.
Football in Nairobi has increasingly evolved from just viewing games on television sets at home to watching football communally with other enthusiasts.
Matchdays Culture in Nairobi
Although the English Premier League enjoys enormous popularity in Kenya, the FIFA World Cup holds a special position in the list of sports events.
Once every four years, the whole of Nairobi is turned into a global football lovers’ hub when everyone dons national teams’ jerseys, waves flags, and engages in lively discussions about football greats.
The matchday culture in Nairobi has developed a lot in recent years owing to growing viewership of international football matches on television, social media activity, and the opening of sports bars for watching such games.
Matches from the FIFA World Cup especially from the knockout rounds draw massive crowds at sports bars.
Instead of sitting alone in their houses, the fans try to locate themselves in places where they have massive screens along with good audio arrangements.

Fans Rejoice with KBC Broadcast Deal
The importance of watch parties has grown after KBC’s successful bid in acquiring free-to-air broadcasting rights.
Before the government came to the rescue, fears were raised that the broadcast would only be done by pay-TV stations, leaving out many fans of football.
It is reported that at least Ksh 150 million was set aside to buy the broadcasting rights for the 48 teams that will participate in what will see 104 matches taking place.
“It is our pleasure to notify the good people of Kenya through the Ministry of National Treasury of the government’s directive to allocate funds towards acquiring free-to-air broadcasting rights for KBC,” says the broadcaster.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup will see 48 teams competing against one another in North America for a period of one month, from June 11-July 19.
