Massive Fire Breaks Out in Eastleigh’s Mlango Kubwa Area

A huge fire has destroyed property in Mlango Kubwa, Eastleigh, along Juja Road on Saturday morning, sending the local residents into panic.

According to reports, the fire started at around 3.00 am after two men came back home from a nightclub and argued before the inferno broke out.

Images and videos shared online by some residents show thick smoke billowing from the property where massive flames are seen erupting from buildings.

Firefighters are already on the scene attempting to put out the fire while the residents appear to be panicked, collecting property and helping put out the fire.

Chaos and Confusion as Fire Engulfs a Sleeping Neighborhood

According to eyewitnesses and footages, many residents were sleeping when the fire broke out.

A voice in the footage described the confusion.

“People were struggling to wake up and they were shouting but everyone was asleep,” a person in the footage can be heard saying. “They even shouted for help but everyone was asleep. They didn’t know who to save, whether the kid or the people sleeping. They were confused.”

In the footage, a lot of smoke can be seen covering the residential area which is densely populated.

A number of people are screaming in the video.

The cause of the fire has not been confirmed and unconfirmed sources reported that the fire broke out after a brawl between two people who were returning home from the nightclub, but police have yet to confirm these reports.

Recurring Fires in Nairobi’s Informal Settlements and Business Areas

Mlango Kubwa is a residential area and estate in Juja Road in Nairobi, about 7km to the northeast of the City Centre, making it the center border between Pangani, Eastleigh, and the Mathare estates.

At the time of writing, there are no confirmed injuries or fatalities, neither the Nairobi County Fire Department nor the Eastleigh police have released an official statement as they are still investigating the matter.

This comes after several cases related to fire outbreak in several counties.

In Silibwet, Bomet county, a suspect was nabbed after setting his house on fire.

Police said they were yet to establish the motive of the incident.

In Ndeffo, Nakuru county, a house was set on fire, however police said they were yet to establish the cause of the incident, adding no injuries were reported.

Authorities stated this fire incident comes on the back of many others that have been happening in the informal settlements and business areas of Nairobi.
