Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has criticized the government’s handling of security intelligence ahead of today’s Gen Z memorial demonstrations.

In a statement dated June 25, Gachagua accused Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen of failing to act on information regarding potential violence.

“Last evening, Kenyans listened to a press briefing by Mr. Kipchumba Murkomen, the CS in charge of a critical docket in the Republic of Kenya. I am vindicated,” Gachagua stated.

He also questioned why the government would warn the public about planned attacks if it already possesses intelligence capable of preventing them.

Gachagua Questions Over Government Intelligence Ahead of Gen Z Memorial Protest

Gachagua’s remarks came in response to a press briefing by Murkomen, who warned of intelligence reports indicating that criminal groups were planning to infiltrate demonstrations and target businesses, property, and individuals.

According to the former deputy president, the government’s primary responsibility is to prevent crime before it occurs.

“What has he done about it? If he is aware of their plans why can’t he stop them? Is he unwilling to stop them or does he lacks capacity or what does he want ordinary Kenyans to do if he is crying as the CS for Interior?”

He also maintained that if authorities know who is planning violence and where attacks may occur, they should take preventive measures and arrest those responsible before any destruction takes place.

Gachagua further alleged that some of the individuals likely to engage in violence enjoy protection from powerful actors within the government, and the blame will be shifted to the opposition leaders.

Concerns Over Police Operations

He also questioned Murkomen’s assertion that some politicians and businesspeople could be targeted, arguing that the government should use available intelligence to provide adequate protection and neutralize any threats.

Gachagua additionally raised concerns about the relationship between the Interior Ministry and the National Police Service.

He argued that operational matters fall under the mandate of the Inspector-General of Police and questioned why the Interior Cabinet Secretary was publicly discussing security operations.

According to Gachagua, the government should focus on ensuring that police officers remain independent and effectively carry out their constitutional mandate of protecting lives and property.

He insisted that the government’s role is to prevent violence rather than predict it.

“It is my take that since the Government knows goons will attack citizens and businesses, then it should not happen since the Government has sufficient capacity to stop it and arrest the goons while in action,” Gachagua stated.

Heavy Police Deployment and Road Closures in Nairobi

This development comes amid heightened political tension and increased security concerns ahead of Gen Z-led demonstrations expected to take place across the country.

According to reports, police have blocked major routes into Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD) today, sealing off key entry points as security agencies respond to planned protests marking the June 25 anniversary.

Officers mounted barricades along Mombasa Road, Lang’ata Road, and near Athi River and Mlolongo, turning back matatus and private vehicles while intensifying screening operations on major highways leading into the city.

In a statement, the Ministry of Interior said the deployment aims to maintain public safety, protect property and critical infrastructure, and ensure lawful activities continue with minimal disruption.

Authorities expect large crowds in Nairobi as demonstrators mobilise nationwide to commemorate last year’s anti-government protests.
