NPS Condemns Officers in June 25 Protests Arrest in Nakuru

The National Police Service (NPS) has condemned unprofessional conduct by officers during the arrest of an activist identified as James Mbugua, a person with a disability, in Nakuru on June 25, after a viral video sparked widespread public concern during the Gen Z anniversary protests.

In a press statement from the Office of the Inspector General dated June 26, 2026, the Service said it had reviewed the footage, which showed officers mishandling Mbugua during the arrest in Nakuru City.

“The National Police Service (NPS) has noted a video circulating on social media showing the inappropriate handling of a suspect during an arrest,” NPS stated.

Following the incident, the Service reiterated that it does not tolerate misconduct, including excessive use of force or violations of established procedures.

It also reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism, human rights and the rule of law.

NPS Accuse Officers of Violating SOPs

Further, preliminary findings show that the officers involved failed to follow Standard Operating Procedures and legal safeguards designed to protect suspects’ dignity and rights.

The NPS described the conduct as unacceptable and inconsistent with its core values.

IG Orders Probe Into Incident

Subsequently, Inspector General Douglas Kanja directed the Internal Affairs Unit to conduct a thorough, professional, and impartial investigation into the incident within seven days.

“Appropriate action will be taken based on the findings,” the statement added.

Public Urged to Share Information

Meanwhile, the Service urged members of the public to support the investigation by sharing any relevant information through the nearest police station or by contacting emergency numbers 999 or 911, the #FichuaKwaDCI toll-free line 0800 722 203, or WhatsApp on 0709 570 000.

Finally, the NPS reaffirmed its zero-tolerance stance on brutality and misconduct.

“We remain committed to professional policing that serves and protects all Kenyans, residents, and visitors while fully respecting their constitutional rights,” the statement concluded.
