NTV Uganda and Spark TV went off air on June 28, 2026, at 5.00 a.m. East African time after security were outside the premises because of an order by General Muhoozi, who is the Chief of Defence Forces and also Museveni’s son.

NTV and Spark TV‘s audiences were unable to access the channels and their screens were displaying the message video unavailable.

This also affected other NMG’s platforms, such as the Daily Monitor, which General Muhoozi had also mentioned in his operations.

The security crackdown began shortly after midnight, with security deployed outside the NMG premises and their staff saying that no one was allowed in or out of the premises.

Muhoozi’s Posts

This came after General Muhoozi posted on his X platform that NTV Uganda and Daily Monitor will be shut down.

“NTV and Moniter are being shut down from today,” Muhoozi said on X.

General Muhoozi, who is well known for controversial posts on his X platform, added another tweet.

“Both NTV and monitor will not reopen without my permission, “ He said.

Media Freedom

In another post earlier, General Muhoozi explained how, in Uganda, he does not believe in a free press and the press should be guided.

“In Uganda, I DO NOT believe in a free press! The press should be guided by cadres of the revolution,” Muhoozi posted on X.

These remarks made by Muhoozi marked an escalation of threats that he was awaiting permission from his father, Museveni, to destroy that media house.

NMG in Uganda owns NTV Uganda, Spark TV, Daily Monitor, The East African Spark TV, 93.3 KFM, 90.4 Dembe FM, The Nation Courier and Ennyanda Newspaper.

No Formal Statement

No Ugandan Authorities have issued a formal statement explaining the reason for the shutdown operation or announcing any legal orders surrounding NMG.

NMG Uganda has not issued a formal statement either, as it still remains unclear how long the blackout enforced by the state is going to last.

Museveni has also criticized the Monitor over the years, calling it an enemy and evil newspaper.

NMG has faced various confrontations with Ugandan Authorities ever since it opened in Uganda in 2006.

The multiple confrontations raised eyebrows among media freedom organizations and right groups across Africa.
