Veteran Journalist Muliro Telewa Dies, Family Reveals Final Moments

Veteran journalist Muliro Telewa has died aged 68 while he was in Nakuru at a hospital undergoing treatment.

According to Telewa’s family, he had been living with kidney failure for some time, although the situation was being managed.

Telewa’s sister says he had a bad cough on Sunday and was taken to the hospital before succumbing to death on Monday.

“On Sunday evening, he developed a serious cough and was rushed to hospital, never to come out. Sadly, we lost him this morning,” she said.

Telewa’s Career

Telewa was one of the journalists who managed to endure police brutality while covering the Saba Saba protests.

Reports at the time indicated that journalists, including Telewa, were assaulted despite identifying themselves as members of the press, prompting condemnation from media organizations and renewed calls for greater protection of journalists who cover public events.

Telewa retired after a long career with the BBC, where he got to work alongside Kenya’s renowned journalists.

At BBC, he served as a correspondent covering major events in Kenya and across the East African region.

During his career, he earned recognition for his calm, accurate and balanced reporting on political, governance and public affairs.

Over the years, Telewa witnessed significant moments in Kenya’s history, including elections, constitutional reforms and governance debates.

Retirement

After his retirement from journalism, he finally settled in Nakuru County and decided to get into private business while maintaining close ties with the Kenyan journalism fraternity.
