Several people were injured during the public viewing of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s body at Mamboleo Grounds in Kisumu County.

In a statement released on Saturday, the humanitarian organization said its responders acted promptly to save lives and stabilize the situation.

“Kenya Red Cross response teams attended to a stampede incident that left several people injured,” the statement read.

Critical Victims Evacuated to Referral Hospital

The Red Cross further noted that they worked hand in hand with other emergency partners to ensure victims received urgent medical attention.

“Working closely with other emergency response partners, those in critical condition were evacuated to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital for further treatment,” the organization added.

Witnesses at the scene described a tense moment as the crowd, estimated to be in the thousands, pushed toward the main stands after a sudden commotion.

Several people reportedly fell and were trampled as others attempted to flee. Security personnel and medics rushed in to control the crowd and administer first aid.

Authorities Launch Investigations

Police have since cordoned off parts of the stadium as investigations into the cause of the stampede continue.

Preliminary reports suggest that overcrowding and poor crowd control may have contributed to the incident.

The tragedy comes at a time when Kisumu has been hosting thousands of mourners and visitors following the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

The stadium has been one of the central venues where mourners gather to pay their respects before the late leader’s body is airlifted to Bondo for the final vigil and burial preparations.

As the nation continues to grieve, authorities have urged the public to remain calm and adhere to safety guidelines at all memorial gatherings to prevent further incidents.
