The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) has explained how it selected students for the Bachelor of Medicine programme during the 2025 placement.
Speaking during a webinar on the 2025 placement process, KUCCPS CEO Agnes Wahome said the agency selected students through a competitive process based on applicants’ cluster points and the number of available slots.
According to Wahome there were only 702 capacities for medicine in all universities both private and public.
The total number of students who applied and had an A plain were 1,535 and the total number of students with A plain was 1,900.
“In total we had about 6500 students applying for medicine against a capacity of 702,” she said.
The criteria used to determine who gets the spot was looking at cluster subjects which are Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology and a language.
Wahome explained that universities offer a limited number of spaces, meaning not every student who meets the minimum entry requirements can secure admission to the programme.
She added that KUCCPS determined placement into Bachelor of Medicine programmes by evaluating each applicant’s cluster points against the available capacity at individual institutions.
Limited Spaces
As a result of the limited spaces in institutions, some students with top grades in KCSE missed out on medicine despite having all the qualifications.
Wahome further emphasized that meeting the minimum subject requirements for a course does not automatically guarantee placement, as KUCCPS must allocate students based on competition for available spaces and programme capacity.

On the same note, she encouraged students who did not manage to get into medicine to explore other degree programmes stating that many courses offer strong careers across different areas.
This clarification comes amid questions from parents and applicants after the release of the 2025 placement results, wondering which criteria were used.
Placement Criteria
KUCCPS has maintained that placements across all programmes are conducted using an established merit-based system.
Their system considers specific programme requirements, weighted cluster points, applicants’ choices, and the capacity declared by universities before the placement exercise begins.
With the 2025 placement results released, applicants are to check their results and download their admission letters to the various institutions to which they have been placed.
Many institutions usually start admission in September.

Students who did not manage to apply for placement in the first place have been given a procedure to follow; however, KUCCPS says it does not fully guarantee placement.
Applicants are advised to check their results through the official KUCCPS website to avoid misinformation and fake news.
