Kenya Railways has issued a fresh update on the Nairobi–Gilgil–Ol Kalou–Nyahururu train service ahead of the Ol Kalou By-Election, highlighting the continued operation of passenger and freight services along the reopened railway corridor.
In an update issued on July 11, 2026, Kenya Railways said the Gilgil–Ol Kalou–Nyahururu railway line reopened on June 2, 2026, and has since received strong support from customers, communities, and stakeholders following the return of services after 46 years.
“Kenya Railways appreciates the overwhelming support received from customers, communities and stakeholders following the reopening of the Gilgil – Olkalou – Nyahururu railway line on 2nd June 2026,” the corporation stated.
The Nyahururu Safari Train now operates from Nairobi to Nyahururu every Tuesday and Friday, while return trips from Nyahururu to Nairobi run every Wednesday and Sunday.
Kenya Railways said the service provides passengers with a safe, reliable, efficient, and affordable travel option.

Kenya Railways Railway Revival Supports Agriculture and Transport
Additionally, the corporation continues to transport freight along the corridor, including fertilizer, agricultural produce, construction materials, and other bulk cargo. Kenya Railways said these operations support businesses, farmers and economic activities in areas served by the railway line.
Moreover, the corporation stated that the railway revival supports the government’s development agenda by improving connectivity, strengthening trade and agriculture, and promoting socio-economic development across Kenya.
“The ongoing delivery of fertilizer to the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) depots in Olkalou and Nyahururu is reducing transport costs, improving access to farm inputs and supporting the Government’s food security agenda,” Kenya Railways said.

Railway Revival Comes Ahead of Ol Kalou By-Election
The update comes amid discussions over the timing of the railway revival ahead of the Ol Kalou By-Election.
In a June report on the return of the railway service, Kenya Railways Managing Director Philip Mainga explained that the region’s agricultural activities influenced the decision to restore the route, especially as farmers faced challenges transporting key inputs such as fertilizer.
“This area where we are is agriculturally dominant. And one of the key inputs they look for, and they have been using, is fertilizer. And one of the things, the challenges they have been having, is how to move this fertilizer or these agricultural inputs,” Mainga said.
Mainga added that the service would provide residents with a cheaper transport alternative, noting that passengers travelling from Nairobi to Nyahururu would pay about Ksh 600.
