Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has broken his silence on the chaos witnessed during the Linda Mwananchi rally in Homa Bay, saying the confrontation was far from the worst political situation he has faced.
The senator, who served as ODM Secretary-General for nine years, said he experienced more dangerous encounters during his years working alongside the late former ODM leader Raila Odinga, particularly when the party was in opposition.
Speaking about his experiences, Sifuna recalled demonstrations held in Nairobi in 2023 over the high cost of living and other issues facing Kenyans.
He said one of the most frightening incidents happened in Embakasi South, where he and Raila were pinned down as the former opposition leader came under gunfire.
Sifuna Recalls 2023 Police Confrontation
Sifuna explained that security protocol determined the order in which vehicles carrying opposition leaders travelled during such political activities.
According to him, Raila’s vehicle came first, followed by that of Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, former presidential candidate Martha Karua and then his own vehicle.
While the cars ahead of him were bulletproof, Sifuna said his was not, recalling reaching a point where police had blocked the road, forcing the vehicles carrying the other leaders to turn back. His car, however, was left at the front of the convoy.
“My car was at the very front, the only one without bulletproof protection,” Sifuna said, reflecting on the incident.
Saying the experience was among several moments in his political career where he felt exposed to serious danger, adding that the situations he had survived were far greater than what was witnessed during the Homa Bay rally.

Sifuna Defends Homa Bay Residents
He said he has consistently advocated for Homa Bay and described its residents as peaceful and committed to democratic politics.
“I have been the biggest advocate and promoter for Homa Bay County,” Sifuna said, adding that the county’s reputation should not be judged by the actions of a few political leaders.
His remarks came after chaos disrupted the Linda Mwananchi rally in Homa Bay on Sunday, August 16, as political leaders and their supporters were caught up in confrontations at the event.
Sifuna maintained that what happened in Homa Bay was minor compared with the situations he had faced during his time in opposition politics.
“The situations God has pulled me out of are far beyond what these people have ever seen,” he said.
